Google has released its Google Desktop Search:

http://desktop.google.com

It allows you to search your computer for certain files by "indexing" (recording so it can keep track of) these file types on your computer after installation and whenever your computer is idle:

- Outlook or Outlook Express email (whichever is your default mail application)
- AOL instant messages
- Text and other files
- Microsoft Word documents
- Microsoft Excel spreadsheets
- Microsoft PowerPoint presentations
- Web history
- Secure pages (HTTP)

All you do is type in a phrase, a word, or anything else you can think of and Google Desktop will actually search not just the file names, but the actual text inside your Word documents, Excel documents, Powerpoints, IM's, etc.

Wow! It seems that Google is going to be even bigger in the CyberWorld!

I have just tried this and found it to be quite friendly to use. Just check out the website I provided above - screenshots are available there!

I don't trust the google desktop program. It can collect emails, im messages, chatroom messages, web history, works, software codes and non-personal information except my personal name and address without my explicit permission. Also, it is risk to show private information (non-personal information) to public. Basically, all softwares are not perfect like security, glitches and structures. I have noticed that some giant companies want to nose on people's computers more and research how to improve their softwares and business (more profits). Also, possibly they can collect personal information from people's computer without their permission for their research or other reasons. For example, when you go to some junk websites then your computer can be installed spywares, viruses and collecting personal information software without your permission and knowledge. I had experienced with those softwares on my computer when I was newbie with the internet.

Personally, I like to use a few trusted softwares -- dreamweaver mx, flash macromedia, ms word and etc. -- on my computer.

What information does Google receive?

By default, Google Desktop Search collects a limited amount of non-personal information from your computer and sends it to Google. This includes summary information, such as the number of searches you do and the time it takes for you to see your results, and application reports we'll use to make the program better. You can opt out of sending this information during the installation process or from the application preferences at any time.

Personally identifying information, such as your name or address, will not be sent to Google without your explicit permission.

from Google Desktop Search Privacy Policy

How can you trust Google?

I just checked GoogleFight...

Microsoft still wins.

Microsoft (103,000,000) versus Google (59,500,000)

Gotta warn ya...Google is becoming just another Spyware...

If you use it (or any other program for that matter), be sure to download AdAware---it is free, and so is Spybot.

Just read a report that Google Desktop Indexes EVERYTHING on your computer, despite user permissions. So if you say have 2 logins, 1 for you, 1 for your SO, Google Desktop will allow you to read each other's email and such.

I still trust Google more than I trust Microsoft.

Google's gathering of information would never reach human eyes.
