Amanda Knox and her boyfriend get jail sentence!!

Shameless Americans. She is a convicted murderer who by enormous turn of fortune has managed to overturn one sentence and then flee the country where the crime was committed.

Worse still you allow her to parade around on tv and give her publishing deals where she gets to act out that some how she was the victim much to the distress of the family of Meredith Kercher.

You also cling to the belief that somehow the double jeopardy law is a good thing???? The UK did away with that concept in 2005. After 800 years of applying it they decided it was antiquated and was letting criminals off when the prosecutors and police botched the first trial. If you are guilty of a crime then the prosecution should be able to appeal to the courts to open new trials if the evidence is strong enough.

If it was a US citizen that had been murdered on Italian soil you would all be screaming for justice and for the extradition of the non Italian national who has fled the country. USAnians are just so blinded by patriotism. More so then any other people.

Naw. Double jeopardy, you know.

Yep and double jeopardy needs to go from US law along with the death penalty. Time you changed your legal system so that you come into line with the more civilised nations rather than the Chinas of this world.

And what will you say if the Italian court doesn't uphold the verdict? All that anger towards America already and Italy won't even ask for extradition until the court is finalized. You don't know the USA won't extradite, they are currently debating the outcome either way.....

It is VERY CLOSER to impossible to remove double jeopardy because they are in our constitution (5th Amendment) - extremely difficult to change and require a lengthy procedure - require 2/3 from the house and 2/3 from senate, and 3/4 from states. Almost no politicians will support to remove double jeopardy at all and your wish isn't going happen, along with death penalty.

Double jeopardy is very pro-human rights and it ensure that our criminal court is not corrupted with all retrial after jury acquitted defenders on charges. It prevent the prosecutors from abusing the criminal court system so there were many innocent people convicted, without double jeopardy.

If you aren't happy with our country so don't come here, that's simple.

Also, our brother Canada banned on double jeopardy too.

A judge and jury have found her guilty. What is worse is that she has failed to appear in court to give evidence in a murder trial and her ex boyfriend also refused to be cross examined by the court. Neither of them are exactly helping the cause of justice or assisting a family that still needs answers as to why Meredith was killed.

Instead US networks and publications have made her into a celebrity and are allowing a convicted murderer airtime. The US is a sick society.

The Italian appeal court already found Knox innocent by overturn the conviction due to errors in trial, so it is OVER.

You will have different feeling if you get arrested for killing someone that you didn't actually kill them - it is known as find a wrong person and you got convicted on murder charge, so higher court overturn the conviction, then prosectors want retrial and re-convict you because of no double jeopardy.

I think European society is sick. :ugh:

Since her guilty verdict was overturned she lawfully left Italy for her home country. She didn't flee the country.

We have freedom of speech in America.

Yes, it is a good thing. Also, it's not just a law, it's part of our Constitution.

So, rather than tighten up the job that prosecutors and police do you prefer to take it out on defendants? That seems backwards to me.

How can you say that a defendant is presumed innocent if you make the following statement?

"If you are guilty of a crime then the prosecution should be able to appeal to the courts to open new trials if the evidence is strong enough."

Duh! A defendant is NOT guilty of a crime until convicted. You have it backwards.

Unless you believe in the legal concept of GUILTY UNTIL PROVEN INNOCENT. :hmm:

If it was a US citizen that had been murdered on Italian soil you would all be screaming for justice and for the extradition of the non Italian national who has fled the country. USAnians are just so blinded by patriotism. More so then any other people.
Does the name Leon Klinghoffer ring a bell?

Time for you to take a chill pill. The hate festering inside you will only mess with your senses.

Well I avoid the US for the most part. I have not visited now in 10 years and nothing there really inspires me to return. It is a long way to go for a pretty bland experience.
What is your home country?

It is a shame about your constitution being so rigid.
It is not rigid. It allows for amendments. It is stable, not fluttering about on the winds of popularity.

The double jeopardy laws were overturned in the UK after a racist police force protected a gang of racist males who had stabbed a black teen to death in an unprovoked attack. Everyone could see that the police had intentionally botched the case with double jeopardy in mind. It took 18 years but finally 2 of the 5 gang members were tried again and found guilty with more modern DNA evidence linking them to the crime. Justice for the family who campaigned for years to get double jeopardy removed
Instead of cracking down on the parties involved in wrongdoing they changed a basic principle of justice? That makes no sense at all. What's to stop equally racist police from abusing the law that allows multiple attempts at conviction? That is totally upside-down.

Still waiting for you to say why she needs to be extradited NOW and not wait final decision, as Italian court has proven their decisions aren't as final as you say cuz they found her guilty, then innocent, now guilty but still been the verdict to be upheld before Italy ever requests extradition..... why are YOU so angry????

...Reba I am European. I move around the member states. Right now I am in London but I have a home in Paris and I have spent much of the last year in Brussels.
Thank you. :)

In what country were you born? (I'm sorry if you already mentioned this but I might have missed that post.)

Each countries have their own justice systems and they handle it differently. If Italy judge overturns her sentence and sets her free, she is free to leave Italy and return to the United States.

The fault could be the police, prosecution making errors. It's no win situation for both sides, Knox is now known in public and what their opinions of her will follow her for the rest of her life... guilty or not.

Retrials are rare. The prosecution have to go to the highest courts and show there is new and compelling evidence and that it is in the "public interest". Most of the time judges will probably reject the need for a retrial. The 2nd Kerchner murder trial would probably have been rejected in UK courts as there seems to be very little new evidence.

Reba I am European. I move around the member states. Right now I am in London but I have a home in Paris and I have spent much of the last year in Brussels.

What "compelling new evidence" was there for the third trial?

Angry? I just am having trouble understanding the general mood of support for Amanda Knox in the US. She has shown herself to be a liar in trying to frame an innocent guy, she has then taken her chance to leave Italy and rather than start a new life she has chosen to cash in on her part in the murder of Meredith Kercher. She has quite some celebrity status and has got rich off that. Justice for Meredith.

I agree justice for Merideth, I also agree Amanda has shamelessly made money. However I still don't know if she actually did it, not saying she didn't but there is no evidence she did. And you keep saying we should send her to Italy before the court process is even close to finished..... and why isn't Raphaelle getting all this crap too. He wrote a book as is doing the same

I don't necessarily "support" Knox but it would have been much better if her first trial had been conducted properly. I think Americans would have accepted the results better if they could be confident of the Italian trial system.

Maybe Knox can't start a new life because she still has this conviction hanging over her head.

Yes, Meredith and her family deserve justice but the way the Italian courts handled things it doesn't really guarantee justice for anyone. Whether the decision is guilty or innocent, no one can really have confidence in either.

In bold, we are not concerned because federal government - DOJ did good job to convict racist, hate groups on crime under civil rights violation or RICO.

Well, Italy ruined Knox pretty much so she's taking revenge on Italy to ruin their reputation.

You could say that United States is not the only country with "broken" justice systems. Obviously Italy broke theirs too when there is no justice for Meredith.

Either way, the image is already damaged not only for Knox but Italy's reputation in justice systems.

When I visited Europe years ago, I remember the machine-gun toting police on Spanish streets and in the Frankfort Germany airport telling you to keep moving with the swing of his gun. The filthy living conditions and couples having sex on their balconies in Naples, Italy. The terrorist bombing in Italy of a place I had frequently visited just a few years earlier, killing two Americans. The 1990's neo-Nazi's threats sprayed on the sidewalk walls while at the same time Germany's traffic cameras could catch you with running a light and give you a huge fine and jail. Later, when I visited the Ukraine, I saw the local police threatening to shoot everyone in our van if there wasn't an extortion paid by our driver.

Greece's starving population and rising crime thanks to their EU government. Last year's school shootings with threats of racism and immigration in EU France.

Oh yea, your European laws and lifestyle are so far ahead of us. I am so happy to read that you have not visited us in awhile. Please don't change your ways.

Yes, same here, I don't support Knox as well, but I just want to ensure that she receive a fair trial. After appeal court overturned her conviction so something is wrong with Italian court system.

I think Knox will stuck in US for rest of her life, unless she could overturn the conviction, so she can't go to Mexico or Canada, or both countries could turn her to Italy.

I am curious what the Italian court findings are to justify this. I have not read or seen a single bit of damning evidence or even a circumstantial story that has a large enough number proveable indicators that Amanda Knox is guilty.

There is no build up to the event that points at Knox. There is no real evidence that she in any way caused or was a part of Kercher's tragic
demise.

The original prosecutor that caused the whole mess has been proven to have been completely unreliable. The police work was atrocious.

Knox has made some mistakes and those have cost her. She paid for that false accusation already. Beyond that what is there?

I personally suspect there is some sort of insidious involvement in the case that has little to do with Knox and Sollecito. Somewhere in that mess of diversion and accusation is a very real case.

That false accusation against the bar owner may be not so false. There is a real story and I think that it is stranger than the present fiction that is being flogged out there. Knox and Sollecito are the scapegoats. They know some small tiny fact that will get them not just put in jail but dead in jail or out of jail. That fact skews what they say.

I cannot help but wonder what other college girls have had various extreme things happen to them around there.

Instead of extraditing Amanda Knox I think the US and Great Britain should be calling for a real investigation into all incidents that have happened to college girls in Perugia, Italy and take a hard look at other Italian cities with similar international college environments there.

Top U.S. extradition lawyer Bruce Zagaris said if her latest conviction for the murder of Meredith Kercher is upheld by the Italian Supreme Court, she will be put in jail. Mr Zagaris said: ‘It is rare for the U.S. to deny extradition requests from allied countries like Italy. Her lawyers would have the chance to appeal and any extradition is a long, drawn-out process which takes between one to five years. ‘If Italy applies for extradition Knox would be arrested by marshals and placed in jail. She could apply for bail and may get it but it would be a close call. It’s likely that she will spend one to five years in jail in America while the process drags on.’

Knox, 26, could be put in Seatac Federal Detention Centre less than five miles from her father’s home in Seattle where Knox watched on TV as an Italian judge re-convicted her of murder on Thursday and sentenced her in her absence to 28 years and six months in jail. The ultimate decision about whether to extradite Knox will rest with John Kerry, the U.S. Secretary of State who has refused to comment on the case. Zagaris said: ‘There is always room for political pressure but the U.S. will likely extradite if the Italy government requests it because they will not want to get into a diplomatic row with Italy.’
