Boy, it was a difficult time I sent my computer to the Staples
and let them copy everything into an extra new hard drive
ONLY for an emergency back-up in case if something
screwed up, who knows.

Then, I told them to install new Windows XP.

Guess What ? Microsoft Word software is NO LONGER
working anymore I am very very upset and disappointed.
It looks like that XP cannot accept Microsoft Word RIGHT?
What is an alternative ?

That is my question too...

Just installing XP on a system doesn't automatically install Word.

I have XP Pro on my laptop and I installed Word 97 with no problems.

Hmm, I did NOT know that I have to
re-install it Sigh.

I did not know that install XP does NOT mean it would
re-install everything else Grrrr OK Thanks !

Geez, I am not that fond of XP

I still LOVE Windows ME !! :-(

whoa whoa.. xp can have any of MS word if you have Office xp.. thats only way to install ms office if you have MS office

I have XP and MS Word 97 on my laptop.

Maybe Word didn't work because the Registry Editor files for Microsoft Word from Windows ME weren't backed up.

Registration files known as *.reg are like "switches" that can toggle aspects of how a program works, including stopping them from working entirely, and Microsoft in my experience requires you to register some of their products (including Microsoft Office) before you're allowed to use the program. Could be that the .reg files which contain the keys and different values for Microsoft Word weren't transferred from Windows ME to Windows XP.

Registry Editor is for advanced users so don't mess around with it if you don't know how to use it, that's like playing with fire. But you can go to Start > Run... and type in 'regedit', then when you are in the Registry Editor, click the tab Edit > Find... and type in 'Microsoft Word' or 'Office' to see if it's even there. Simply press F3 after you've found one of the text to find the next one in the editor.

Or simply reinstall the Word or Microsoft Office software and it should work.

Your right about registry is for experts. It can be lethal to computer if not done correctly!

Really, regedit wouldn't solve the problem. The real problem is key code is buried really hidden in the OS! You have to KNOW the file name because it would NOT show up on windows explorer or under command environment! If these key files are missing, then reinstall is really needed to solve this problem. Bill Gate did this on purpose to thrwat piracy and generate more money for himself! What greedy! He is already rich enough, what more he wants?

Experimenting with such well hidden files is for only the most advanced users; so forget it... it's better to reinstall.
Anyway, when you say key code buried deep in the OS are these the super hidden files you're talking about? The super hidden files can be revealed. There's a key value in the Registry Editor that will reveal them in Windows Explorer, but I don't know enough about working with them. Or do you mean files even deeper than that?
You're right, Bill Gates has way too much money. I bet he swims in a really giant vault filled with gold coins, just like Scrooge McDuck. Ever seen Ducktales? :D

Maybe MSword still alive but you not see ICON on Desktop or menu

you try

click: START
click: RUN
type: winword
click: OK

if work?
let me know

Update:
I have not checked this thread for awhile
until just now...
I already resolved this by purchasing and
installing Microsoft Works Suite 2006
which seem overwrite these old Microsoft Word
Thanks anyway

If you have Word 1997. Don't worry. That you already install window XP. But, didn't see Word 1997?

Don't worry, there have been able to use change to set the window different kind of window you like to set up. Very easy.

FYI if u dont want to BUY a MS office for yr pc but u need the word processor to help u get ur report and etc done right? like linuxman did for me, go to OpenOffice.org: Home and u can install ALL the work u need in there. it'll save into a .doc or excel or PP ( powerpoint) thats the best thing you can do and best of all its free and u don't need to worry about paying hundreds of bucks... THANKS gnulinuxman for this its definetly made my life SO much easier :-D

Thank you Javapride for sharing
I did check this within a few minutes ago
and it looks awesome
because it does include a few important features
such as Math, Draw, Calc Spreadsheet,
database, word processor (Writer), and Presentations(Impress)

Since I already bought and installed Works Suite,
I guess this would NOT hurt anyting if I try
both Microsoft Works Suite 2006 plus OpenOffice
Right ?

If you right click on the Word file in windows explorer and select "properties" in the dialogue box, unger the General tab click on archive and de- select "read only" in the Attributes section. That should let you play with it then.
