Almost Every Cleanup Worker from the 1989 Exxon Valdez Disaster Now Dead

Will those people who work and help Gulf coast oil get sick later alike cancer or something in their life?

Possibly so. I remember the Exxon Valdez. I was living here when it happened. I know Molly Wilmot (the owner of the beach where it ended up) was livid. She was a good friend at the time of the family.

The workers who cleaned up the nuclear plant area in Colorado called Rocky Flats all suffered radiation related diseases like cancer. The health effects of radiation are well established. It may take some time to clearly establish the health effects of the oil and dispersant, especially when corporations can afford to buy loyal scientists.

Bunch of CRAP! I was 118 Day's under contract on the Valdez clean up. So far I know of no one that was working on that spill that has died under anything other than old age or accident. Granted I do and did not know everyone working on that spill but I did meet and know quite a few.

there you go. you know only a few....... out of thousands of workers. therefore - this article is not bunch of crap :)

I find it hard to believe that "ALL" suffered from radiation? I guess I may be dead and not know it. in 1952 I worked in a high radiation area and that was before we had film badges and dosimeters so don't know how much I have had. However I again worked with X-ray Cesium and CO60 in the mid to late 60's and we did have film badges and dosimeters. I will say that so far no ill affects and also admit that I stay away from X-ray as much as possible even though medical X-ray is a lot less than it used to be. I was working in industrial X-Ray

You might want to take a trip to Ukraine or Hiroshima or Nagasaki.

about your hazardous work... were you provided with sufficient equipment and proper training to handle radioactive material?

Don't really know how to answer that? we were in a learning process at that time. As time went on we learned more and of course were then able to take precautions. As I said we did not even have film badges or dosimeters early on. As you most likely know, those that worked on the Manhattan project were learning and had no idea that it was as deadly as it was. People do that work today and have no problems due to learning and precautions to take that were unknown at that time. We hopefully continue to learn every day.

First they say "the vast majority" of them are dead, which isn't the same as "almost all." Nevertheless, I would like to see some actual numbers, and a citation for the source of those numbers.

I don't know how old the workers were at the time of the clean up or how old they were when they died. It has been over 20 years, so what was the death rate for a comparable demographic group that didn't work on the clean up? :dunno:

Reba, you raise some very good points. That's why studies are very hard to measure...have to take so many factors into account.

I wouldn't be surprised if there's some truth in that.

I mean look at the firemen, policemen, and others who assissted in the clean up of ground zero soon after the towers collapsed. Now so many of them have respiratory illnesses not to mention other sickness. Govt does not recognise the fact those sicknesses can be traced back to ground zero.

I agree with Miss Delectable - I think there's probably some truth in it - spill- worker site-related illnesses - but the challenge will be in proving it and standing up to the corporations. Realizing this, however - do I think certain death and disaster will follow EVERY worker who assists or is exposed to anything with/from the oil? Don't know about that....
