Advice? We want our son to be mainstreamed. He wants to go to the School for the Deaf

I wish you the best of luck.

If I had been given the option while I was in elementary school (K-8 school) in the older grades to go to a deaf school, I probably would have greatly considered it. I did not belong in that school and I hated it. I would not consider it now. Even though I am the only other HOH student at my high school (there is another HOH girl; the only other deaf girl went to the deaf school in a town 2 and a half hours away) I feel that I do belong and I enjoy it. I do sometimes wish I had that extra support, but I don't really need it.

However, I do think that if I did want to go to the deaf school that I should be given that choice. Good luck, Jason.

Jason,

I totally can related to what you are going through, I've been mainstreamed from K to 12, and not one person had invited me anywhere until I was in high school during my junior year, I was invited to go to a mall with one hearing student, and I was also invited to go to a Halloween party with another hearing student, they both were my friends., I gonna tell you how glad I was to be part of this. I can totally understand the loner, and not having the opportunity to meet people like yourself for social reasons because hearing people usually can't fully understand a deaf person's signing the way a deaf person can, simply because we live the life of a deaf person everyday. ;)

I wish you all the best of luck, let us know how it goes with your new school. ;)

I can only imagine the emotional roller coaster ride you must be having regarding your sons education. The journey continues. :) Your situation I am sure is creating all kinds of questions for you. These are simply a few that I can think of, and I am not you . You are his parent and know what is best for your child. :)

Have you:

1. Researched the deaf school as far as quality of education?
2. Can you be provided accurate information regarding grade level achievements for all core subjects?
3.How does the mainstream school quality of education compare to that of the deaf school?

I can answer number 3. At an average, it's plausible it's superior compared to the mainstream school. Why?

Deaf teenagers have been seeking away from mainstream schools to deaf schools with ASL for a decade. It's extremely rare to see ASL students seeking mainstream schools and cued speech during high school. This proves a lot to many people, except AG Bell and NCSA.

Your advices are hostile when you don't encourage parents listen what this guy himself want AT ALL, and istead focus on points that can help parents turn down the wishes of their son. Every family need advices that can help they make choices togheter, especially when the child is this old.

All this to promote your agenda and do some blatant advertisements on Cued Speech. It really amazes me that you still aren't banned.

Cued Speech and Sign Language is just an option...there is nothing wrong with either of them as it is just a choice to see which fit for the deaf person by the parents. Cued Speech isn't going to replace sign language at all, and sign language isn't replacing cued speech either. It just happens. There are still some pretty smart deaf people who uses sign language have very good education level as well.

Jason, middle school is always hard, even for so-called normal kids. I think that you'll like high school more no matter which school you attend. I hope that you find the right fit. You sound like a capable young man who will do well wherever you are. Good luck! Let us know how it goes!

Could you explain this? I don't understand how that makes the quality of a deaf school superior. Isn't that the same thing as saying that this local community college has a higher retention rate than say, Yale, therefore the quality of the community college must be superior to Yale?

Oh, well in that case....

Public schools are so much better than deaf schools because I met one deaf guy who went to a deaf school and he became a go-go dancer.

Grew up in deaf school.

Now I noticed many public high school offer sign language that many kids can make friend with deaf kids and my friends show me report cards what their kids enrolled that have lot of courses than what deaf school have. Social skill better, more sport event, Huge populations choice of boys/girls to date, easier get jobs since many parents/kids knew deaf person and hiring if person doing good in school. Have better guide to future educations. I know it was hard for me to tell as deaf school is so fun but no fun in future.

 then how did many of my friends who went to Deaf schools lead successful and happy lives?

Just because one goes to a Deaf school doesnt mean their futures are doomed.

There are many hearing people who went to public schools are living lives on the street or as criminals.

How one's person's future is determined depends solely on the person..if they wnat a better future, then they have the control to make that happen.

The kind that you fork over dollar bills to ??

Now this is odd. When I mentioned about knowing an oral 'success' became a prostitute you went all offended. When someone elses mentions someone at a deaf school being a Go Go dancer that is ok?

No I'm not offended by Daredevil's comment at all. I'm just wondering why you have a bias for the oral only system.

There are some deaf schools that are superior to some public schools.

But did you see why flip said that the quality is superior? Because deaf people tend to stay in deaf schools while deaf people in mainstream tends to flock to deaf schools. That may be true, but as I said, I don't see how that makes the school's QUALITY superior. To me, it's a communication needs type of thing...

Oh gotcha...yea, I get your point. I misunderstood your post, obviously. :D
