AD an accurate sample of the deaf population?

Is AD an accurate sample of the deaf population? No.
I found out that almost all of my deaf friends never heard of AD, let alone participate in it. Even though their written skill levels vary, I wouldn't feel comfortable in portraying this site as the norm, since there are so many variables to take into consideration.

Same here with all of the deaf people I know and are friends with. They dont give a shit about online forums. I know hundreds if not thousands of deaf people.

I'm kinda leaving FB myself, so this is one deafie who is going to be FB-less. I'm not closing my account though. I'm leaving it open for family and close friends except they never say anything on FB which make FB so boring. So I just decided to lay low and block people from writing on my wall and such (because I don't feel like checking on it). I starting to think people are tired of FB.

I only use it to play Castle Age. (addicted as you know)

classless deaf

What I noticed in the short time I have been around AD is that it looks like a high % of people are HOH and CI.

I can only think of two Deaf who are CIs on AD beside myself just off my head. :hmm:

I swear almost all hearing are trolls though I think I'm a bit biased cuz they get my attention :D

What I find is a majority on Ad are people seeking advice on different options to deal or come to terms with their hearing loss. Albeit there is a strong sense of community here with a decent size group of people who comment and discuss different topics daily.

If you are asking if this would be a true random sample that could effectively be generalized, then I would say, yes.

Some people are talking about how many of their friends don't go on AD. I don't think this is a good reason for why it is not a good sample. Obviously, AD does not represent the POPULATION of deaf people.

Imagine every deaf person in a large group of friends. Only ONE person per group goes on AD. This would be somewhat a good SAMPLE of the deaf population, since deaf people usually hang out with people similar to themselves. Of course, this is oversimplifying the situation.

But yes, it seems like FB would be a good place to get a bigger sample. Where else, anyway? Audiologists? That would eliminate deaf people who don't use any devices. Deaf clubs? That would eliminate a lot of mainstreamed/oral deaf people. And so on. FB is as neutral as it gets, other than people who don't go online, but this probably would affect all types of deaf people equally. So it balances out.

Bigger sample doesn;t necessaryily mean a generalizable sample.

Facebook is dependent on the seven degreess of friendship, so is Twitter.
So, it's not a good sample if you want a random one.

Seldom people join AllDeaf because their friends are on it.

Pretty much so, not to mention people don't get on AD because they have FB :)

if you look at how many people signed up, and how members come and goes... I'm sure some deaf people we know have posted on AD or at least lurk at one time. 36,956 is a lot of members.

Are these friends from AL? My sister thinks there something wrong with AL school for the deaf. The Daily Home - Students at ASD get lessons in baby sitting (she questioned about "babysitting" lessons. She just doesn't think it is a good school but she never went there so I don't think she can be the judge of that)

Yep. That is also a possible reason. I've visited ASD personally several times and well.... at the risk of offending people, my opinion is that it isn't a good school. The main reason is lower education. A lot of classes have to do with social skills or basic skills for living. I'm not sure why ASD's classes are different from the public school curriculum. Shel often talks about how all public schools must follow a curriculum, but... I'm seeing otherwise. Perhaps there is a subset of students who DO follow the public school's curriculum?

My friends tell me about their days at AIDB and it usually goes something like "Yea, the school sucked, but at least I could talk to anyone." I don't think a school should cut funds for education because "at least they have ASL and a social life." I've talked to a board of trustee member and their funding is drastically low compared to 20 years ago. It's sad really. Oh, and a good portion of the teachers there didn't even sign very well.

Going to deaf clubs here is drastically different from my experience when I went to visit NYC for the AD meet. So yes, perhaps being from Alabama is a part of it.

Historically, I sure it sucked, but I don't know if they improved now.. I do know that alot of her AL deaf friends did not have a very good writing skills but they were her age or older and not anyone younger.

In my opinion, no, it hasn't improved much. But then again, I don't know how it was a long time ago, but one of my friends who went there is a 50ish year old guy. It's all speculation from bits of information and personal short term assessment, to be quite honest.
