On Monday, the bureau published its 2013 Uniform Crime Reporting statistics which show, in part, that Detroit has both the highest rates of murder and violent crime for cities with a population over 200,000. In 2013, the city recorded 316 murders (includes non-negligent manslaughter), or 45 per 100,000 people. That’s 10 times the national average and the highest of all large U.S. cities. Detroit residents also reported 14,500 violent crimes, or 2,070 per 100,000 people.

One bright spot for Detroit is that crime rates actually took a dive from 2012, when there were 55 murders per 100,000 people, as well as a higher rate of all violent crimes “We will continue our focus on eradicating violence, and certainly dismantling these street gangs,” Detroit Police Chief James Craig said last month after a 3-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured in a shooting.

The FBI defines murder and non-negligent manslaughter as the “willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being by another.” Violent crime includes those offenses, as well as rape, robbery and aggravated assault.

Dafuq? Chicago didn't make this list. Well, I'm not complaining, as that tells me the Chicago Police are doing their jobs.

Pretty biased and paranoid, it applies anywhere in the world, depends on the circumstances that come together to create any dicey situation.

Yeah, not just Oakland is bad areas... there's plenty of Ghetto town all over that is infested with homicides, gangs and other crimes. Why is Chicago not on the list when they had hundreds of homicides. I'm pretty sure there is much more worse areas than those listed.

It is based on ratio by 100,000 population.

No surprise, SF looks great but Oakland is on other side.

I work for Baltimore City schools so I guess I need to go like this to work everyday....

Absolutely, my organization has been trying to pass laws allowing teachers to carry at their place of work.

Every other professional is allowed to .. but apparently no one trusts teachers ... is it because they are not trustworthy and cheated to get federal money ?

I mean ... i would have never suspected that teachers would get the same reputation that lawyers and paralegals would get.

I was joking. There is no way I will bring a gun to work. It is not who I am.

Crime...home invasions are bad in my City...my son told me the other day...that he was getting his CC very soon. 'Course I was a little concerned, but know that during these times, it's becoming more of a necessity to protect the family/those you love....I've no qualms about owning a gun...knowing that at my age, I would be an easy target for thugs breaking in....Killing a thug surely does bother me (the thought)...but common sense tells me...it's the thug...or me & my family....A no-brainer....

Sadly even smaller cities and towns are getting hit with more crime. We have a rapist attacking high school girls while walking to school. And a small town that right next where I grew up was in the news the pass few days . So guy from New York came to our city and opened up a 'massage parlor' ,and people notice it had a lot of foot traffic and that were all men. Thugs loves small cities b/c they think the cops are too stupid to know what is going on.

That is because homicides were way down in 2013, and they're down this year, too. They're saying we've reached 1970's levels in terms of homicides. I'll have to search for that article, and post it. It was very recently they wrote that.

Here's the article in relation to that 1970's level:

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-violent-crime-1970s-level-20141110-story.html.

http://www.newsmax.com/US/murder-chicago-violence-/2013/12/31/id/544509/

That one ^^ shows the difference betweemb 2012 and 2013. It also shows that homicides are declining, and that they are mostly concerated in the South and West Sides, two areas I generally avoid going to.

Saw off shotgun is awesome... Can saw it off if you know the limitation and done it right.

The reason why saw off shotgun? Its to limit the shooting range, if somebody breaks in my house, I would shoot that bastard, but not my awesome neighbor. In other words, the longer the barrel is, the farther the bullet will travel.

That's because Oakland and Richmond is infested with gangs and some areas in SF is bad as well. All we can do is be vigilant to your surroundings and don't go to dangerous place alone.

Yes, that's true.

Same goes to NE and SE part of DC and some part of PGC (especially closer to DC line) are bad area, also some part of NoVA are unsafe area, especially in apartments in Alexandria and Woodbridge.

Well, I certainly hope you have a plan to protect kids if a crazy person shows up.

All schools around here have a School Resource Officer (SRO for short) that are on campus anytime school is in or for any function and is employed technically by the police department but their assignment is at a school. Full uniform and gear including a patrol car with backup weapons in it (M16 and Beretta semi auto 12 gauge in the trunk) and if something happens they can radio for more help to main dispatch. My nephew is the SRO at a local high school and has arrested quite a few kids lol they don't mess around when it comes to student safety.
