I had just applied for a free MY IP RELAY number yesterday for incoming relay calls from voice users via AOL AIM messagers. Now I am curious if there are pros and cons concerning this new service. What do you think of it, and how do you like it so far?

Just wondering. :)

I almost never use the phone except for outgoing calls to businesses. I have no reason for using this service so I can't really say anything on it. Sorry.

Works great for OUTGOING calls...
but I do have problems about INCOMING calls
which does NOT work....Sigh.

Incoming calls doesn't work? Hmmm.... :/

My IP Relay - thumbs up

I use My IP Relay on AIM alot whenever I'm outside or somewhere using my sidekick2. On pc, sometimes I use it but do use other services like i711.

So far, my experience using MIPR service has been real good. I even own a MY IP Relay Number so I can use it specially for my business or non-business hearies to call me. Anytime while I'm mobile they can reach me.

Whenever I don't turn my aim on, they can always leave a message by call so IP Relay send me email with caller's message. So far it works great. It's like a free telephone number with message recorder.

I can call them either anytime, anywhere without paying a penny! Can't beat that, amen! (true enough the same thing with other relay services) But this one is quite unique and ideal for deaf sidekickers while in mobile especially.

I don't even use TDD anymore and only recieved crap calls (all by voices .. no use). So I disconnected BellSouth telephone service and that even saves me $40 mo./almost $500 a year, yeah! I don't even use TDD anymore and only recieved crap calls (all by voices .. no use) so thanks to MIPR! And I use the VP-100 with home phone numbers it still works even after the telephone disconnected. Amen! :D

Also on AIM MIPR that you can read others in BOLD while yours in light .. that makes it easier if you need to review your conservation or by others. That feature doesn't exist in the IP Relay (not in AIM) in the sidekick, ironically.

For you who experienced some difficulties, I think I know why. In most cases whenever you turn on AIM and MY IP Relay, you type 'call' once then put numbers who you want to call .. in case if there isn't any response .. best thing to do is type 'end call' then go back in and type 'call' then they would response. If you don't do it, it's a problem like stalling unless you clear it up and try again. That doesn't happen often though.

Once you understand better by practicing few times at least and take an advantage of getting your own MIPR Number, you sidekickers will love them, believe me!

This is correct that you type call only once. Once you've typed call, you're placed in queue to be connected with an RO, and anything you type after that initial "call" will be entered into the conversation. However, I don't reccomend disconnecting and then attempting to reconnect. This will only bump you back down in line for queue, meaning you'll have to wait longer. Just type call, enter the number you wish to dial, and we'll handle the rest. :thumb:

I'm glad you like our service. As far as I know its one of the first of its kind, if not the only. As I said, its the only IP Relay service I know that offers incoming calls from voice to text.

Hmm .. thanks for the tip. :ty:

I like it. However, it is supposed to leave a message at my email address and last time, it didn't do it. I'm watching it to see if it will work consistently.

I have my own personal IP relay number and have had no problems receiving calls whatsoever. I believe that the caller has to request that a message be sent. The one time I got a message is was left on AIM where my number is associated and not my email. The window stays open until you close it. It gives you the number that called and a message if the caller leaves one.

I gave that a try and it bugs the hell outta me so I decided to quit it.

That's the part that sucks. If I don't answer I want the message emailed rather than leaving it in the AIM window when I'm not there. The only solution is to use AIM on your pager, not on a computer at home.

I do have my own My Relay IP number and I have no problem using it. I give out my number to hearing and my doctors/OB/GYN. So much easier for them. Even for my hearing friend to get ahold of me if she need me to watch her girls. She loves it! But pain in ass to say GA or SK.

I agreed with MP42. We also did cut off our phone with Frontier and saved us about 500 a year too! So we use VP most of the time but if I am out of the house, I use AIM. I leave my AIM on all the time in case anyone calls me. Worth it!

I have applied for my IP #, so I can have my dad or friends call me! It says within 10 to 14 days I will get number... hopefully I get it before session adjourn so I can give it to my dad, and test it with him....

In my pervious post, I tought it would be 10 to 14 days to recieve #, strange I got my number just today after I registered! isn't technology are wonderful? I will have my dad to act like guinea pig, see if it work or not.... Lets see what happens with me.....

I love it! I always click on iprelay icon on right hand side at AllDeaf...

It is sooo much easier than tdd! I could save the conversations..

But one thing about con is when you are online at iprelay...talking with customer service about your computer or printer problems...they would tell you to restart it...then you will lose conversation with iprelay...so what I do is...I tell them I can not restart bec of online iprelay..so they just give me step by step...I write it down...or copy/paste to notepad or whatever...then hang up then restart and do the step by step on my own...;)

Ah... Welcome to the 21st century! :D

I have registered my IP Relay #, and it's great that I can allow voice callers to call me and I can be able to type using a computer, thorugh AIM or Sidekick!

But the disadvantage is those with TTY can't use my IP-Relay #... "My IP Relay Number" only accepts voice-to-TTY calls.

If I still want to make/receive TTY calls in Sidekick, then a TTY software should be built-in to work with the Sidekick's voice features...I mean...convert from text to sound and send it through a microphone and when receiving TTY tone from a caller, convert the tone to text...but I bet that would be processor intensive...or maybe not... Sidekick shouldn't have to use data communication to send/receive TTY text...I think I should ask about whether smartphone manufacturers should implement TTY software into any QWERTY devices that can communicate through voice and not through data...

About the GA/SK in instant messaging, I agree, but I don't seem to have problems that much as I'm used to TTY before I get to use AIM and make/receive calls with My IP Relay. You'll probably have to get used to it since you can't send/receive real-time text...in other words, you can't see what the relay service are typing to you until the person hits enter and the relay service can't see what you're typing unless you hit enter after you type in GA. If you don't type GA after you hit enter, then the relay service will not know if you're finished typing or not. Just think of it as if you're using an old-fashioned TTY--a primitive version of instant messanging.

I have received a strange call thru my ip relay. But it wasnt meant for me it was meant for someone else. :giggle:
