The vaccine is to prevent shingles. I had chicken pox as a child, and am now in the vulnerable age for shingles, so I want to prevent it.

The shot isn't 100% prevention. The fact sheet that the nurse gave me states that it reduces the chance of getting shingles by 50%. It's a once in a lifetime shot.

It can be expensive & health insurers may not cover it until you're 60. I have another 1-1/2 years before mine will cover the cost. :(

I know people under 60 who have had shingles.

The information we got from the nurse stated that it's recommended for people over 60 because they are more likely to get shingles but it didn't say that people under 60 couldn't get the shot. I read that the CDC approves the vaccine for age 50 and up.

I guess it depends on what a person's insurance will cover.

I know you had to be certain b/c I told my daughter that she was too young to get vaccine according the paper I got from drug store , it had nothing to with my insurance. It might be that there was not enough vaccines to go around so it was only be given to people over a certain age. We have a lot nursing homes in my neighborhood so maybe that was part of the reason.

Shingles ( The Varicella Zoster virus * A form of herpes not related to genital herpes* ) is treated with a vaccine called Zostavax. It is approved by the FDA for the use in adults over the age of 60 and in certain cases also between the ages of 50-59. It has not been widely studied for the use of adults younger than 50. This is why it is not used in adults younger than the age of 50 widely. It CAN be used if a doctor recommends it and individually prescribes it to their patient, but the risk of that falls back on that doctor... so it is rare they will prescribe it since there has not been enough studies on the effectiveness / risk ect. from the FDA. It is rare that someone will contract shingles before the age of 50 and if they do it is typically due to a compromised immune system due to something like an organ transplant, chemo, HIV ect ect. ( Hence why it is higher risk to elderly patients ) :) So yes, the vaccine CAN be given to people younger than 50, and the insurance company WILL cover it... but that's if the physician will write the script and wants to take the risk since so little information is known on the risk of administering the vaccine to the younger population at this time. :P

My husband had shingles right after coming home from Iraq. He was a mess, health-wise. Hernia, broken knees, and shingles. He was only 36 when he had shingles. He hurt so much that his fingers curled up. It lasted about 2 months. The VA has said they'll give him the vaccine now if he wants it. (He's 43 now.)

Oh thats right. you all got back. I forget.. ouchie. Movies expensive .. i know.

Now, that's over and done with and the kids are not going to do any other activities that cost money for the rest of the week. It is either stay home or go to the pool at my gym.

:hmm:...never had a flu shot or a shingles shot....and I, along with 5 other siblings had chicken pox....all at the same time....:giggle:..my poor Mamma!....Seriously, I'm not the type to jump in and say...."Gotta get a shot for this...or that"....that's just me, tho'....

You can get the shingles vaccine even if you never had chicken pox. :) Some people never remember if they had chicken pox and now since they have the vaccine to prevent it... the singles vaccine is usable without the need of previously having them. :P
