A Thread About Absolutely Nothing! Part III

I am good as a teacher but I dont really enjoy it like some people do. I DO enjoy planning and creating materials for my lessons and working one on one with students though. I hate classroom management and dealing with disruptive behaviors. I just dont like being a classroom teacher. I would rather be an one on one teacher but unfortunately there are not a lot of teaching jobs doing that. Most of them are in the classroom.

You sound a lot like me. I didn't mind creating lesson plans and all that- in fact I translated that "skill" to Program Specialist/SSW (creating Individual Personal Plan and "case work" type stuff as well as communication plans for deaf/nonverbal clients) and QA Testing (creating test plans, test cases etc). I'm fine with one on one mentoring...sometimes but I still feel inadequate with that even if I know the material very well (like the VBA macros used for our testing). It's a lot to do with my personality too I think. In person I am a huge huge introvert who hates dealing with people, the deaf part is a factor but even with deaf groups I am an introvert (just ask my hugely extrovert friend in DC lol).

Great. I was hoping color font was NOT available because certain people, who are always preaching respect others, insist on using color font when they've been told that others on the forum have difficulty reading color font. Ah, well, not sure if these non respectful people's posts are worth reading anyway.

You said it best.

I am not an introvert and I love going to my team meetings with my co workers or going to professional development sessions and sharing ideas. I HATE HATE HATE dealing with behavior problems and unfortunately that comes with the territory of teaching kids with severe intellectual disabilities. Even teaching kids with normal cognitive functioning, still deal with disruptive behaviors like bullying, attitudes and etc. I just dont like trying to teach AND manage behaviors at the same time. TOOOO exhausting and it drains me constantly. When i work one on one, rarely I see those behaviors...it is usually during a whole class instruction. Peer influence thats why. I think I am just tired because at my old job, I was placed with the kids with the challenging behaviors because I am good at it and now at this job, I work at a school where all of the kids have developmental disabilities. It is just not my thing. I love the kids but constantly being creative to redirect their disruptive behaviors is just not fun for me. Some people like that but I would rather be teaching and discussing the topics. One of my friends said I should teach at the college level since I love to have group discussions but I dont want to go back to school for a PhD. lol

Ahh I understand a bit about the behaviors part. My first job out of college was a residential facility for intellectually delayed (past term: Mental retardation). I worked in a building that was the behavior treatment unit. Anywhere from 30-42 (can't remember the exact number) residents all with varying degrees of behavior disorders, Dx etc. My last year there they started adding on programs for MH/MR kids :eek2:- and that group had the attitude problems etc you see in your classes.

I don't miss it though I miss my 'kids'.

I could see you in a Deaf Program at the high school level where their only difference is being deaf and using sign.

You just gave me an idea! I think I will search for case manager jobs. I had been searching for jobs with the keyword "education" because I dont know much about other fields. Now, I am searching for case manager jobs.

Good luck! I'll keep my fingers crossed I know that there's a real need for people in the social service field, case managers etc. Try looking at group homes maybe. Not sure on larger residential facilities though.

See PM for more detail- rather keep that off the forum. :)

I know this isn't the weather thread, but I so can't wait for today. It's supposed to be 67 !!!! It was just a few weeks ago when we had sub-zero temps. I need to go find my summer clothes for work :)

My husband swears he heard Sandhill cranes last night. (I don't know what kind of sound they make, some kind of honking or cawing.) He says he knows the difference between those cranes and other types of cranes/birds by sound. We are so hoping the two Sandhill cranes that mated last year and took up residence in our backyard come back. They flew south for the winter. He said the sound was still far away for whatever that means, so I hope they are still making their way to our yard. They prefer marshes and wetlands, and we have plenty of that in our yard.

If I remember that type of crane correctly, they are kinds small, right? Small like maybe bigger than crows....
