A Techie Thread About Absolutely Nothing!

That's awful if someone unplug PoE cable and plug laptop then blow laptop up. :Ohno:

Smile, if it coming from POE switches..nothing will happen but if POE injector, I really haven't thought about what will happen if plugging it directly to laptop, unless if it has a sensor that able to detect that end source doesn't need power, it will "disable" the power. Usually POE injector only connect directly to one device, it can be either for Wifi box or camera. If you have multiple devices, it's better to get POE switches and this switches can act as stand alone switch just to use as like other switches or can use both, workgroup switch and power provider. Doesn't matter what port to plug in.

Very soon, this computer of mine will be hitting the canal up the road if I can't get this fixed.

First off:
I have Windows Vista Home, all updated. 64 bit
I have Trend Micro Titanium 2012 AntiVirus

This morning, everything was going okay, but then the computer locked up. I shut the power off, waited 5 minutes, then rebooted. At that point, Google Chrome would not work. Windows Message says the program was not working and windows will close the program and look for the problem. The Google screen never comes up. Then, I go to IE to check that and find I can't get to the internet. All lights are on the router (D-Link DIR-615) and all but one on my modem (AT&T hi-speed). I call AT&T, we find that the connection is working fine, but my router is not. Fine, I can deal with that for now. They are sending me a new router and modem combination package they have that will be better. In the meantime, Google Chrome still will not work. So, after careful consideration (200 bookmarks to worry about), I uninstalled Chrome. I rebooted computer and then reinstalled Chrome. Well, when it tried to open the Google Chrome page, "Bammo!!", I get that Windows message again. **Yes, I hear everybody saying, "Get A Mac!!"** Cant' afford it now.

So I am dealing with IE and I hate how slow it is.

More background, and Naisho knows about this. My computer has been crashing off and on. I do get the "Blue Screen of Death" and when I get it back up, I go to Safe Mode, and do a System Restore, then I am up and running for a few days.

I will be changing my anitivirus in the morning. I will uninstall Trend (40 bucks down the drain) and then download and install Microsoft Security Essentials. I am just hoping I can get this mess with Google Chrome worked out.

The canal is looking better and better. Wonder if the gator in there wants an Acer Aspire One desktop computer? :hmm:

My conspiracy thought... Microsoft did this on purpose to force you to buy Mac.

Wait a min...that doesn't make sense!

Microsoft Security Essentials is very good and I recommend everyone to use it and no one complained about it so far.

KristinaB did mention that she has a stop error, BSOD 0x0000001A.

Some of you (I think you know this, Highlander), may know that this is an memory issue. I gave advice that I generally think this is usually a common problem of bad memory chip or OS installation during bad ram or peripheral.

I suggested testing another DDR2 module and wiping/restore the data, but I know it can be headaches for KristinaB.

Sent you a message about possible ones if you know of them. I can try to get one here this next weekend hopefully. Other than that, I am working on the antivirus issues as well. I keep losing my internet today due to a bad modem. I am waiting for the new one to be delivered anytime.

Well, the most important about the memory modules is to be sure all have same brands, speeds and number of chips. If you brought memory modules from two different companies, they are more likely getting system hanged or BSOD.

Well - we found it's not the memory. Next step coming up. Also, will work on the antivirus switch.

We ran memtest86+ for 9 cycles without errors. Also, blue screen of death came up with a lot of stop codes and I neglected to get them all written down, but here are some I got:

Stop: 0x000000050 (0XFFFFFB7901977A70, 0X0000000000000000, 0XFFFFF800026D48B5,0X0000000000000000).

STOP: 0x0000001A (0x0000000000041287,0x0000000000000030, 0x000000000000000, 0x0000000000000000)

0x0000001A code but with different ones after that. I went into safe mode and was able to do a system restore again.

This is what I have:
Acer Aspire x1700-U3700A
E2220 Intel Pentium Dual Core
4GB DDR2 memory
640GB SATA Hard Disk
Super Multi Drive
SN# -------------------------
SNID# -------------------

When I go to Control Panel and go to System:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Service Pack 2
Rating 1.0
Processor: Intel (R) Pentium (R) Dual CPU E2220 @2.40GHz 2.40 GHz
Memory(RAM) 4.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit operating system
Windows is activated

My Google Chrome totally died. I cannot totally uninstall it and reinstall it at all. When I click to open it, Windows pops up with a message: "Google Chrome has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solutions is available." Now, it works on the netbook and other people are not having a problem. This makes me think I have some kind of virus or something, but I am not sure. I still need to uninstall my Trend Micro Titanium 2012 and then download and install the Microsoft Security Essentials and can do that today, but Trend says I have no viruses or anything wrong.

All of the above comes from email correspondence with Naisho. Any help or ideas from someone else would be appreciated. And again, a Mac is not in the plans.

Just got the "blue screen" again. Here are the codes:

***STOP: 0X0000003B (0X00000000C0000005, 0XFFFFFA6002AB4A56, 0XFFFFFA600CBCFF60, 0X0000000000000000)

***nvlddmkm.sys - Address FFFFFA6002AB4A56 base at FFFFFA6002A0C000, date stamp 4cc73a68

Any ideas?

##edit to add - Naisho says this points to a possible video card issue, so I am downloading updated drivers for my video card.

I use Memtest86+ to test the memory or take ONE memory stick off if there is two memory sticks if still error then put one memory stick back and take other memory stick off, if still error then OS need overwrite file system *won't lost any data files.*

Sometime bad HDD cause system file corrupt or missing then I use HD Tune to test HDD.

So better way for test memtest86+ and HD tune first. I warn you that memtest86+ take few hours to full test depend what size of RAM you have.

Aaahhh..it's your NVIDIA video driver..it's the main culprit. You may need to download the latest video driver from Acer, also you may want to check to get latest BIOS update from Acer as well.

Ah. Damn Nvidia. My friend have same problem on his Windows 7.

Use driver sweeper to clean bad driver off. First do driver sweeper ( Guru3D - Driver Sweeper) at normal Windows Vista then do again at safe mode then download new driver from World Leader in Visual Computing Technologies | NVIDIA

Got the new drivers for this Thank you!! Also, Naisho was able to (with a lot of work) get my Google Chrome working.

Overwrite Nvidia driver won't solve a problem. So better way to driver sweeper at safe mode. (happen to my friend's issue before)

If she lucky then that's great.

So far I am having no problems, but I will keep this in mind.

You know sometime, if that doesn't work, then it could be a graphic driver dependent.. as for example...flashplayer, Photo editor, ummm..trying to think whatelse... gaming software and such.. that can effect the graphic card hang up. So, you may want to isolated by disabling some start up programs (which is in msconfig). Once found the culprit..then you can go to that software company to get the latest update if you can.

By start up programs, I am assuming you mean the ones that pop up automatically when logging on.

If so, that's a medium sized list of stuff, but never had issues and most of them have been updated.

Weather Bug, The Weather Channel, AIM, MSN IM, Skype, OoVoo, P3, and then the usual Windows stuff.

I had Weather Bug before and it gave me a lot issue all times. I uninstalled it. It was happen in 2005 or early. right now, no idea.

So far, for the last 2 1/2 years I have had no problem with Weather Bug. Only thing is, Weather Bug and Weather Channel differ by up to 10 degrees on my local temperature. Right now, weather bug has 75F and weather channel has 72F.
