I would like to know who ever suggested that CI's were or ever were expected to be a cure?

My Point Was

My point was some have claimed that a CI is thougt of as a cure and I wonder why they think anybody does?

That probably came out of the CI in children wars. One argument is why parents implant their children is so they can hear and speak like the hearing. It is as these children were "cured" of deafness.

Another possibility refers to those who had been in deaf culture, get a CI, and then migrate away from it. There is this attitude of "I'm superior over you" bit. Maybe some of it is as they were "cured" being deaf.

The reality is that most people know CIs are not a cure and one is still deaf. Some may do extremely well with a CI(s) as to fool any hearing but most aren't in that league. Even these folks are deaf at the end of the day when they take it off and go to sleep.

I most certainly don't think of as a cure "per se". But rather as a great tool that allows me to integrate into the hearing world on their terms.

I actually know of a family that implanted their child very early and insists that "She's not deaf. We fixed her ears".

Some people are under the illusion that having a CI gives you the same hearing as if you were born hearing.

Right. Illusion. Not well informed people. Or unable to understand how things really are.
Nevertheless it's pretty evident CI is a device with an impressive potential.

The vast majority of people aren't well-informed on Deaf issues, or any disability issues for that matter. Being HOH, I get people expecting me to be fully hearing all the time. Yeah, I can hear you in this noisy room! I can only imagine what CI users get.

Diagnosed with Progressive loss

I have been diagnosed with Progressive loss which my doctor predicts will make me profoundly deaf in 10 to 15 years(HOH now), but she really has no idea how fast. My family and some of my friends act like that should not scare me to death(pardon the pun) and then there is all the yak yak that stem cells will be available next week.
