Do you know how to stop dogs when dogs get excitedly nibbling on people like nibbling people's skin?

Thank you.

Here is one suggestion

Source:how can I stop my dog from nipping people
How old is your dog? How long has it been nipping? Does he nip at ankles or at fingers/hands/arms? How big is your dog?

There are several physical cues you can give... depending on how big your dog is, how aggressively they bite/nip and how long that has been a habit. I will go from softest to hardest.

1. As soon as you feel ANY nip, pull away and say, "OW!" very loudly then, put your palm in their face and say, "NO!" also, very loudly. In fact, with ALL of these, ALWAYS reinforce the action with a verbal command.. such as "NO!" or "NO BITE!"
2. Use a small soda bottle, fill it with pennies/nickles, close the lid and keep it nearby. Shake it at the dog to startle him whenever you get nipped. Don't do it RIGHT near their ear, though... hearing damage can occur. Another option is to throw the bottle at the ground near the dog when he behaves that way.
3. Mist the dog in the face with a squirt bottle when he nips. This might make a puppy afraid of water, though,.. which will make bathing difficult. A large fullgrown aggressive dog will probably not like this either and in a dangerous way.
4. Whenever the dog nips, close your hand around their muzzle, give their muzzle a single firm "handshake" and release.
5. When they nip, thump them on the top of the their nose with your forefinger and middle finger held together. This should be a tap.. not a hit.

If they are an ankle biter, try putting something bitter/hot on your ankles, when they bite, they will get the gross taste AND your verbal command. You can find that stuff in a pharmacy to stop nail biting and thumb sucking.

Everyone in the household needs to follow the rules to help train the dog... also, don't do ALL of these.. find the one that works best and stick with it.

Also, encourage him to chew on TOYS, large bones or rawhide... dogs naturally like to chew, nip and gnaw... and it should be something they should be free to do with the appropriate toys (not furniture, trash, or household items)

Frisky, my dog does this to us all the time! :mad2: I'm all for the "natural phase" but he's a year and a half now...shouldn't this phase be over??

Usually if he jumps up on us or plays rough I tell him very firmly "no" and sort of grab his mouth shut as a way to emphasize it.

Of course I love him in all other ways... just not when he's sinking his teeth into my joints. :giggle:

Thanks, RD. I need to re read it one more time right before we visit my friend's dog who has big dog today. :ugh: But have you experience like this to stop dog from nibbling?

I had two dobermans when i was growing up. Kilo and Rex had always nibbled on my back. I hated that!

Do you mean the dogs you are asking about belong to other people?

If that's the case, I wouldn't even get involved with training them to do anything. That's not your responsibility. If you don't want your friends' dogs to nip you, tell them to lock up the dogs before you get there. If they ask why, then tell them. They are the dog owners, so it's their responsibility to train them.

If they refuse to do that for you, then they aren't friends who care about your well-being. They also risk a law suit or even criminal charges if someone gets hurt from their dogs.

Reba,

Both. I was hoping to see someone else have other tips as much as I can get some information. I am not going to discuss about how wrong or right how to train dogs or not my responsibilties. But I agree what you just said in your post, though. thanks.

Wear thick socks, gloves and jeans.

Hope it goes well for you.

Is it a herding dog? If so, the dog may be "herding" you. The dog should be trained to sit on command. Speak to the owner about the correct command and use it. If the dog does not sit on command, ask the owner to leash the dog.

I have a herder and she nips my own kids when they play. The kids are the ones who are poorly trained! When other kids come over, I make sure that the kid can control the dog or I crate the dog. Herding dogs are wonderful but they do have the instinct to herd, even when they don't nip.

from the gist of it- its not your dog that youre asking the question about? If it is your familys dog I'm happy youre trying to address the issue.

if its not your dog- have the owners keep the dog away from you- they might be embarrassed but it was their responsibility of the dog's conduct if it has nibbled you in the past its more likely it has done it to other people and they haven't addressed the issue.

People just do not think its a problem if it does not break the skin. Yet people with small children would think differently or older folks. This behavior is annoying and traumatic to some people. I would never ever allow any of my dogs to even think about doing that in any manner or allow this herding behavior (I've not yet owned a herding dog breed). Even puppies know better. People are strictly teeth off animals in my household.

I just hate it when people come over to my house that do not know my dogs react really scared and hug the walls. I ask them why? They all say the same thing some people they know own unruly dogs that has nibbled them or bit them. Or had a bad experience with dogs growing up. THIS is just not acceptable for any dog of any size or breed.

Well, if it's somebodys dog is annoying you and you don't want to make a big deal about it with the owner, I assume they are a friend. Here is a tip.

Bring a small bit of pepper in your pocket. Just sprinkle a small bit were the dog is nibbling. Dogs hate pepper, he won't bother you again.

Thank you.

make a puppy yelp. Most puppies learn from other puppies and dogs that they are hurting them.

and remove him from the situation. don't worry he'll outgrow this.

most herding dogs don't always outgrow this so if you are excited or running around. He is too and a herding dog tend to nip at people ankle because it's their instinct to herd. So you have to either keep him calm or give him plenty of exercise so he doesn't get too bored or excited.

Sometimes it is best to put him in a crate or tie him when people and children are coming to visit.

When it comes to behavior changes, It usually involves incentives. So try this: when your dog starts to nip on you or someone, say a firm "No!" (Don't get mad lol), then reposition how you want him, say "stay!". If he does
it correctly, reward him with a small nibble of dog food. If not - repeat ( I know, it may take awhile). when he starts to learn this, instead of looking at him after "stay!", continue what you are doing. After a minute, if he is still sitting or lying down, reward him. Eventually go between kibble and pettings until his only reward is a petting (it's called reconditioning, we can't have reward kibble forever, can't we?). You get the idea, your dog doesn't understand direct talk at first, you need to show him and let him know when he does it right, that's why incentives are also important. Good luck!

Is it a toy or small breed? For some reason, people think it's acceptable to let them nip people. You won't see any medium- or large-dog owners letting their dogs get away with it. :|

Pepper had no effect on my Labs. They thought it was seasoning to make things more tasty.
