i noticed my friend who's deaf bring a notepad and a pen
for fast food restaurant or at the store. some hearie were like expression rolling up eyes when a deaf person show a notepad. it's like saying, "you wasted my time". some hearie have no patient with deaf person.

when Ddeaf person show to hearie person, what he or she write. a hearie person asked other, "what is this?" or talking to other hearie person behind a deaf person's back like whisper.

i also noticed when a deaf person wrote a notepad that says, "i'm deaf".
hearie person seems uncomfortable or awkward.
my friend and i don't like some hearie who seems afraid, awkward or uncomfortable. i

sometimes, i helped intrepeter for my deaf friend instead of writing a notepad and a pen.

i'm not against hearie but it's how my friend and i seen it. some hearie don't like writing back and forth notepad.

(sorry for my grammar english)

I been there. Some of my friends still carry the notepad and pen. I felt uncomfortable to go with them.... BUT I did use the notepad and pen when I did not speak right word.

I have experienced this a lot of time. I can speak but there are times when hearing people (especially random strangers) are not able to understand my "deaf" accent and that makes it frustrating. So, I'd request for a paper and a pen to clear things out. Some of the time, some hearing people are more than willing to help out but there are some of the time I'd be encountering with some ignorant hearing people who would scoff and doesn't want to be bothered with it. Sure, it can be annoying when one just tells me to shove it up. When they are giving me that kind of attitude, I'd normally be polite and request to speak to a manager or someone who is in a higher position to point out the issues.

At times, I'd be finding myself surprised because when I speak to a hearing person at a restaurant or wherever it it is, some of the hearing people would immediately recognize my deaf accent and starts to sign. I'm like "Hey, Cool!" It doesn't happen that often though but it's nice to see some hearing people who are also making an effort to converse in sign language, even though if their skills are not so good and trying to fingerspell.

too bad to them, let them to learn about Deaf culture. Torture them. Lol.

yea, some hearie are nice when they know about deaf but not all.

I'm a pen-and-paper girl. If they try to talk instead of writing back, I simply stare at them and point to the pen. Most of the time my cold stare gets their attention and they start scribbling away.

I leave mine in my Jeep...just in case...whenever I go drive thur such as McDonald's or Wendy's or whatever...so I'll have our meal written down what we wanted to order. :) Less confusion or misunderstand.

Yeah!

I usually do that whenever I order from Macca's via drive thru but the drive thru today is now out of the question cause they have installed a speaker box! How annoying is that?

I had to go inside, some staff gets unfazed looks at me, then I had to tell them "I'm deaf, you idoit!" (Nah, just I'm deaf) but there are some few barriers that we have to get use to.. the hearing people needs to be MORE aware about our deaf 'accents' and its culture.

Ah, in a 'school-teacher's mode', aren't you? *quaking in boots* ...

I have this problem also...
I keep a small whiteboard with erasable marker (so I can see it better, the thick black lines stand out better than pen or pencil on paper...)

I notice some people just don't want to bother with me...
And I feel it is also hard for me as I can only see maybe 1 or 2 feet, and not everything... only a small field of vision. So it can be hard to see what people are doing, and how they are reacting to me... it makes me nervous if I can't read expression.

I think people also get confused because I can hear environmental sound with my CI, and some times notice when someone talks, but can't understand them, and I might look towards their direction even though I don't really see them well... I think my glasses also confuses things, like they wonder why I have them if I can't see well anyway.

I've never really had that problem. I mean, I don't use paper-&-pen myself... but some of my friends do. When they do, they don't really get any objections or complaints.

I guess it depends on where.

boy, I haven't use notepad and pen for a long time. I think of them as waste money and tree.

I use my PDA, usually typing something what I want to order before I show up on front to make order. Unfortunately, most of them don't read the whole message and end up the wrong order or forget to see the last line said "To go" when they point as eat in or to go. Sheesh. *point at my PDA* See at the damn bottom, beep beep!

I have to bring pen and paper to chat with hearing people. few people were annoying. I made good point about did I ask you to learn sign language? No, Did you ask me to learn lip reading? no, then can we read and write? yes.

It didnt happen to me often because my hearing friends know me.
