A New Deaf School is coming!

Yes. They could use a teacher using ASL with a voice interpreter, or the other way around. Kind of like the LOFT program at St. Rita works. But students, whether hearing or deaf, are expected to communicte with the teacher in sign. It is a truly bilingual atmosphere for all.

*nods* Exactly.. :)

If you look at their website, and go to the Staff...you'll see that a lot of them have quite a bit of experience. The lady that's in charge, who is the Nevada RID President, helped me tremendously when i went to Vegas to visit my college. She quickly got me a free interpreter. She was okay (student interpreter), but I had one nevertheless. Good thing that I was able to speak for myself and lipread.

From what I heard from this interpreter that the Nevada RID is pretty much brand new, and they're getting a lot of members already. It's been since October, so I don't remember too much.

So, yay for Vegas to catch up! Maybe I'll give them a hand.

Ohh awesome, that's nice of Nevada RID President did for you :) Wish your lucks :D

It s excellent especially for deaf from Hawaii. More deaf people who born or raised in Hawaii are moving to Las Vegas due to high life cost in Hawaii and Las Vegas is considered "9th" island for Hawaii community. Now there will be a deaf school in LV. Expect boom of Asian-American Deaf students.

Is there going to be a waiting list for this school? Where's the funding going to come from for this school? Is it going to be run down like other public schools in 8-10 years????? Will the kids of those well known or really big in the local deaf community be the firsts to get into this school??? Will there be discrimination, will the hard of hearing and hearing impaired be excluded from attending this school?? Will this school force oral on the deaf students or will it teach asl, our language???

I don't see any "waiting list" in the official website.

Where's the funding going to come from for this school?

Read the official website, you will find out.

I don't know... Ask the LVCSD.

Will the kids of those well known or really big in the local deaf community be the firsts to get into this school???

Well, as far as I known, there are 85 percent of Nevada State population are in Reno and Las Vegas metro areas, so I have pretty high bet that there are more deaf people in Las Vegas or Reno than any other of the state of Nevada.

Will there be discrimination, will the hard of hearing and hearing impaired be excluded from attending this school??

 LVCSD = Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf, I am not sure what you mean by this? Also I am sure they will welcome the HH in that school.

Will this school force oral on the deaf students or will it teach asl, our language???

No, but ASL of course. That school want to teach the deaf children to learn both of the worlds between the Deaf world and hearing world, so that the deaf children can live in hearing world on their own, while they can be in the Deaf world for their own cultural and language.

The charter schools are by and large, BI-BI in philosophy. The lack of BI-BI opportunities in the public school system is the reason that the charter schools are being formed.

As for the rest of your questions, these would require a crystal ball to predict the answers.

Well, It's official. Las Vegas Charter School of the Deaf (LVCSD) has found a home.

Here's more information on this --

LVCSD

Jolie,

I already knew that will be coming, because i got that news came from my friend's father's friend who have been talking about LV Charter Deaf school since last 4 years which they have been keep trying to make it. So, they made it.

Hip, Hip, and HUZZAH!!!

*dances* YAY!!!!! So cool!

How far away is Reno from Las Vegas? Maybe a good idea might be to start a Deaf School in Reno, so that the Deafies there can get a good education.
Oh, and the Deaf Charter School movement CLEARLY indicates that regular schools/regular classes and being housed at a hearing school hasn't really translated well into a good quality of education for dhh kids!

I am soooo happy about the new school LVCSD!!! I am jumping for joy at this. Let's celebrate and keeping our fingers cross that AGBers don't interfere the LVCSD to try to change and stop ASL. They better not do that. Congratulation to the new school. I wish there are more like this school all over North America. This is what I really want when I was in the mainstream schools when I did not have ASL. Now in Las Vegas, Both D/HOH and Hearing students can use ASL to communicate with each other. That is great. :h5:

7-10 hours would be properly guessed. For Reno, they would suggest them go to Fremont because it is nearest to Reno by only 4 hours. There are several kids who live nearest Reno (lake tahoe's area) goes to Fremont. Just let ya know-

Im CSD Fremont Alumni.

Oh that's good that Reno kids can go to Fremont. I think that maybe in the future a good idea might be to have dorms or "foster/host family" set ups for the kids who don't have access to Deaf Ed.

It's good that they got one in LV opening this Fall.

It seems like they only offers grades K-3 this time... will they expand more grades (4-12) in near future, I wonder?

Is there a mainstream program after grade 3 there? (I assume so)

I wonder if LVCSD is open to any children living outside of Las Vegas/Clark county?

The reason I am asking this is that LVCSD is run by the State, not CCSD (Clark County School District.)

Good questions. I think I know the answers but I will call and find out for sure and let ya'll know.
