A Motorcycle Thread About Absolutely Nothing!

I have witnessed motorcycle accident unfolded before my eye 20 years ago. I was idling at stoplight and observed motorcycle and pickup truck at night. The young guy tried to throttle up to clip the truck making left turn. He had more than plenty of time to slow down to let truck turn ( he had a little over 150 ft ) But he made bad decision and truck turned but stopped suddenly just 1/2 way, the guy locked his motorcycle brake and skidded sideway and slammed against truck grill and he flipped up to windshield and top of truck then landed on pavement next to driver side door. I immediately ran to the guy and he tried to stand up but immediately sit down and said my leg is broken. The driver of truck was so :pissed: and I told the driver that I will be his witness if he need me. Funny thing that it was isolated area with little business on one side. As soon as I helped, 10 people showed up out of nowhere :dizzy:. On day of court, I showed up on time and the driver's lawyer thanked me just to show up and I saw young guy with leg cast. He plead guilty because I was there as a witness and I didn't have to testify.

I sometime ride without helmet. My helmet have broken flip up latch. Because it's a cheap helmet. I planned to get another one which have better flip up latch. Also I rather wear helmet often because of bugs, objects, blown dirt or sand and especally what I hate is when I rode behind cars or trucks, water coming out of exhaust or A/C drizzling on my face. I had to back out further. So Helmet is better.

Yesterday, I was riding on my way home from work and it was very hot out. I didnt wear helmet at that time cuz my head cover with sweat and want to cool off while riding. When I was riding down on a Parkway (55mph highway), the car about 50 ft in front of me ran over broken plastic object. one little piece did flew and hit my head at 55mph (literally bounced off on my head). It hurts a little because of sunburn on my head. But that's one lucky strike, I could have been injured if metal object flew into my face.

If I get new windshield for my motorcycle, I would be able to wear 1/2 helmet (maybe Nazi helmet with spike on top  ) without faceshield which is more convenience than full faced helmet.

On Memorial weekend, I rode motorcycle for 1 1/2 hr to Lake Melvern, KS for deaf Poker camp. It was drizzly all day until after 6pm, I left for trip. The road was a bit wet. I packed my bag and wrapped it on behind Sissybar with couple of long bungee cord. Funny thing while I was on the way to I-435 ramp, I hit a bridge gap and it gave my motorcycle a jolt, the bag fell out and tumbled on highway which I didn't see or feel it. As soon as I got off the ramp to I-435, the driver pulled up to me and pointed back and mouth her word "Your BAG!!". I nodded and pull over and stopped. I looked back on stretch of 435, no bag. I had to go to 119th St to go around to North 435 then to I-35 North. I kept my eye for bag and I had gut feeling it fell where I hit the bridge gap. I made U turn and head to I-35 South, Sure enough I found my bag just in the MIDDLE of Renner Rd ramp!! Yike!! I pulled over and ran to pick up bag and ran back then put bag in FRONT of Sissy bar and wrapped the bungee through the bag handles to secure it better. I took off and head back to I-435. The drizzle stopped and highway was drying up, so I rev up motorcycle to 75mph until I was behind Semi-Tractor trailer going 85mph so I tagged along for 60 miles  There were alot of "Skunks" on that day so Semi-Tractor driver slow down and sped up every time he sees "Skunks" so I followed  I arrived to Lake Melvern camp and everyone was surprised that I arrived safe from drizzling day. I told them drizzle stopped when I started on the way.

I enjoyed camp and had lot of fun chatting with deafie. I rode on long Melvern dam during evening when sun is about to set, lot of mosquitoes, bugs were splatting on my face at 35mph (didn't wear helmet at that time). When I arrived back to camp and my RX sunglasses was splattered with bugs  I told my son that next time when I ride, I will wear helmet with face shield on.

Some deaf friends told me and everyone that we are expecting 40mph wind and they have to be careful on the way with their TT (camper trailer). They asked me if I had any problem riding through strong wind, I told them that my motorcycle is stable in strong wind but it's annoying when I had to lean sideway against wind sometime. Basically, my motorcycle is heavy with fat tires which is why it can handle wind better.

On Monday afternoon, I headed back home and was riding at 80mph fighting stiff 40mph breeze almost an hour then finally it subsided when I was approaching Edgerton, KS (20 min south of Olathe, KS).

I enjoyed my little vacation over Memorial Day weekend.

lol @ windshield fluid spray at my helmet. I hate that.

To protect your face without helmet - you can wear bandana around your face and also wear motorcycle goggle. But a motorcycle mask is preferable because it's thicker and more protective

ah.... yes yes.... the classic bungee incidents.... Bungee Cord should never be used when it comes to motorcycle. It's a serious safety hazard.

What you should get is a ROK STRAP. Little expensive yes but much better and more durable than bungee cord. Bungee Cord is susceptible to sun UV and nature (rain, dirt, etc.)... meaning it will break easily in short time. You don't want to end up like this guy who went on road trip and the driver was yelling at him - YOUR BIKE IS ON FIRE!!!!! YOUR BIKE IS ON FIRE!!!!!!! *pointing at back of his bike*

The guy guy didn't even notice cuz the wind was blowing fire back and his luggage on back of his motorcycle was on fire. What happened was that he used bungee cords to tie down his luggage on back and his exhaust pipe was emitting heat hot enough to melt bungee cord and then his luggage was loose enough to get in contact with exhaust pipe.... and then the fire began.

I learned my lesson too cuz I did same with my motorcycle pants. I tied it down in back because the weather was TOO HOT and HUMID and I was going to faint from heat. I used bungee cord and apparently, the wind was too strong and blew the bottom of my pants off. My pants was just flying around but my other bungee cord prevented it from falling off. While my pants was flying around like a flag, the bottom of my pants was burning from my exhaust pipe. The driver was yelling and pointing. I looked back and my eyes went :eek3:

since then - I threw away all bungee cords. Now I have several ROK STRAPS and also some cheap straps like below

My Rx sunglasses have strap on. Its part goggle, part glasses made for motorcycle ridiing. I do have black leather skullcap which is thick, I bought it from Ego Cycle for $12. Leather outside and demin inside and it is comfortable to wear. I was thinking abt getting face shield as well. They're not expensive tho.

 flaggey pant.

I agree that bungee cord isnt good retainer. I could get bettet straps tho. I wouldnt worry about luggage falling on exhaust side like guy had. My motorcycle already have saddlebags installed. Its hard for anything fall into exhaust pipes tho.

In Ebay, they sells 6 pieces luggage sets for mototcycle for $80. It be nice to have it without resort to bungee cord.

sometimes some riders use bungee cord to strap something on top of saddlebag because some stuff doesn't inside. and then that bungee cord may somehow gets loose or something (from strong wind, vibration, or worn off)... it touches exhaust pipe or......... even get taggled with moving part like wheel or chain! :Ohno:

Of course because bungee cords have hooks on both end and it easily become unhooked if wrapped or retained in wrong way.

Some motorcyle like mine are heavy and big that bungee cord dont have any chance to tangle up and lock up wheel. Itll get ripped apart like spagetti lol. Bet itll be lot work to clean it up

I have one and it's built-in fans to keep your face cool and anti-fog.

NICE!! One problem if I want one, I would have to take off sunglasses then put helmet on then put glasses back in. I check flip up helmet with fans but there's none I can find. It's nice to keep head cool

You can add transparency on the shieldface. (Dark shield during sun then it become clear shield during night) No sunglasses need.

Yup saw that. I used to have tinted face shield back in 80's. I had open faced helmet borrowed from my brother and it have clear, grey tint and yellow tint. Until I bought my own full faced helmet which I bought it from Western Auto for $25. and it didn't have face shield cuz it don't have riviet where I can snap a small face shiled. My uncle had more expensive full face helmet that have air vents (pop up "scoop" that scoops air to cool head) and interchangeable face shield (it was back in 80s as well).

The flip up helmet have dual visor that have built in sunglasses (no Rx) that can be flipped down or up within control on side of helmet which holds face shield.. I was thinking about getting one so I won't have to switch my Rx glasses to sunglasses that require me to remove helmet (my Rx sunglasses have strap on thats why).

But the bad part is that no fan  But the flip up helmet that I wanted have bigger air vent than my current helmet.

My current helmet have air vents but it did cools my head but not that much.

I'm proud to announce that my bike has hit 16,000 milestones last week :)

TCS just called me from the staging area. Westboro is at the funeral site. The funeral is being held in the local high school. The police are keeping Westboro outside the back of the school building. The Flag line will be at the front entrance. Also, the bigger bikes with the full-size Flags will escort the hearse from the funeral home.

TCS said there are lots of bikes there, from many different places. Also, VFW bikers and other groups.

i am getting motorcylce in next month or two right now better take class before getting one.
