A Motorcycle Thread About Absolutely Nothing!

WD40... so many fiery debate about it on cleaning chain. It said that WD40 can penetrate into sealed O-ring and destroy the lubricants inside. But then... some people swear by it. :dunno: What I do is spray WD-40 lightly on towel and clean the dirt off if the chain's very filthy.

Teflon Multi-Use = :thumb: and I love it. I bought a bulk so I think I'm good for a year or so.

about cleaning chain - I bought DuPont's new toy... called "DuPont Motorcycle Degreaser for Chain & Sprockets". It just came out. Little pricey though... $7 for 11oz. It works pretty nice. Spray it and all the dirts come dripping down. I dunno if I'd buy it again. I'll probably switch back to WD-40 when DuPont Degreaser's empty.

Cool. People have their own different ways of their taste with lube supplies. you know..

:hmm: Mine is a shaft drive, just only replace W-90 gear oil in wheel gear case (following maintenance schedule) that's all I need on my Cruiser. My brother told me that shaft drive is much quieter and less maintenance than chain and belt.

Question, how one does clean Belt on belt drive oppose to Chain and Shaft??

On my bicycle, I use WD-40 to clean and lube chain. I didn't have issue with it. I've seen bicycle store sell chain oil. I've used bicycle chain foamy cleaner/lubrication and it was kinda messy but it cleans and shines the chain.

Back in old day, when my brother and I used to have minibike and gocart, We take chain off and wound up chain then plop in large coffee can filled with engine oil (10 W 30 engine oil) and leave it in for a week or so. It protects chain from rusting up and keep em' well lubed and clean. When I take chain out, I just use old rag to wipe oil off the chain then put em' on.

What are advantage/ disadvantage on Chain, Belt, and Shaft ? Are they any difference on any 3 of those "drives"

yes but HEAVIER! and very expensive!

towel and soap? I hear that using shoe polish brush is a popular choice. All you have to do is inspect the belt for any sign of wears.. that's it. Makes me wish mine's belt driven but nah! Careful - a small rock that gets lodged in between belt and pulley can rip the belt.

WD-40 is great for cleaning cuz it penetrates but it's not great for lubrication because it evaporates quickly so you'll need something that will stick to chain for constant lubrication... hence chain grease or chain oil.

that works too. Lot of riders still use this method to clean and lubricate their chains.

oh god - do you have a ruler????

why?

to measure the d*** cuz it always end in pissing contest! :laugh2: long story short....

chain-driven
advantage: fast, the most efficient. customizable. easy. can change chain length and sprocket (different # of teeth) to whatever you want. that's why majority of bikes use chain. Mine's customized for city setting... meaning more OOMPH! (torque) at gear 1 but the result is I sacrifice some speed (just a few mph off) for it cuz majority of my riding is in city, not highway. If I have a new job and commuting's on NJ Turnpike... I'll have to change chain & sprocket for less torque but more speed which means lower rev.

disadvantage: constant maintenance and cleaning and lubricating.

belt-driven
advantage: set it and forget about it! doesn't require much maintenance- just look and feel. it's smoother than chain

disadvantage: it's slower

shaft-driven
advantage: maintenance? what maintenance? basically nearly none! all you gotta do is fill the oil... that's it. it's smooth as baby's bottom which is why sport cruiser or touring bikes use it.

disadvantage: $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$, heaviest, and your simple job takes longer than chain-driven bike such as changing tire.

my next bike - shaft-driven airbox. I definitely could use those power around here. It's getting quite unpleasant to ride my bike at highway speed but this also means I'll have to work out cuz it will be f'ing heavy!

If I were a motorcycle driver, I would choose either belt or shaft drive cuz I like the smooth rides.

belt-driven motorcycle is mostly sport-cruiser type (like Harley Davidson)
shaft-driven motorcycle is mostly Adventure type like BMW R1200GS and sport-touring type like Goldwing

so you're the Harley type?

Haha, I don't know. I like the Honda Goldwing but that thing weighs a lot!

I read reviews that it looks intimidating and heavy but once you ride it - you don't feel it. I've gotta find out!!!! I found the rental Goldwing in Connecticut for about $200 per weekend.

*checking my piggy bank* :(

 That's why I put a third wheel under mine! Jiro is right, tho; once you get a rolling start, they seem light, especially today's new ones cuz they shifted the center of gravity a little to get that result.

Jiro, didn't know that you could rent large motorcycles, cool!

Tousi, would love to ride on one of these days with a friend who can do it. Im chicken shit.

I think trikes would make me feel alittle safer, lol.

If I remember correctly - he is known as "Yellow Wolf". From what I hear - he hung up his helmet and sold his bike to buy 2 new bikes for his nephews (or nieces or both). His Goldwing was heavily customized.

Including "shaving off" the lower parts to take those curves, I suppose.....

That modified goldwing is kinda like a sport luxury car like a Lexus or a Mercedes benz or whatever.
