A deaf girl aged 7 dies by cochlear implant.

What I don't understand is why they went ahead and did the surgery. I'll say both the parents and the doctors were irresponsible. The doctors should had refused to do the surgery till they receive the vaccine record as the proof.

I secondly w/you!

Word!! That's what I even said too, about the doctor should have asked or seen proof of vaccinated, guess wasn't even thinking maybe--can't afford an error you know, because it can backfired, and guess what-- it already has. :(

The doctor probably did tell the mother but the mother as quoted "forgotten to do it" so maybe Doctor assumed the child is being vaccinated as we all don't know as it just doesn't make sense to me anyways !!

IT DOESN'T MATTER!!! :nono:

the doctor should have damn well asked the parents if their child was vaccinated to be sure instead of making assumptions!!! he didn't do his "job" very well, obviously!!!
:thumbd:

my dr and audiologist asked me a few times if i had a vaccination-- to DOUBLE CHECK!!! >>> which says it all!!! >>> they have a great reputation and are well known as well!!! :thumb: even the nurses at the hospital on the day of my implantation, asked me that too!!! it shows that they knew how to do their job and did it very well! sheesh!!!

(that damn creepy dr from ct never mentioned a damn thing about the vaccination! who the heck knows something could have happened to me under his care!!! :-o OMFG!!!) :rl:

I wondered if doctors tells each of their patients that before getting a cochlear implant, because that's very important that parents need to be aware. I hope those who wants a cochlear implant would learned from her death, get vaccinated for meningitis before going under the knife to get implanted.

I DOUBT IT!!!

cuz i never knew about the requirement of getting a vaccination before the implantation, until my dr at northwestern told me!
this is SO PATHETIC! :thumbd:

True, you have to be ahead of the game as you think Doctors know it all (off the topic) when my mom had her major surgery, there were some info the doctor didn't even look until we told him.... so sometimes we are the ones have to do their jobs correctly... we all make mistakes as we are Human... but this sure freaks me out as well that this doctor didn't know any better to check if the child has been vaccinated or not... sadly...

I felt so bad for the girl. I blame on her parents for not getting her to get vaccine soon. Shes dead already. sigh

When I was going to have CI surgery. My ENT said must to have vaccine of meningitis or she won't do the surgery. So I had vaccine two weeks before surgery.

i feel bad for the parents too...

it is sad that the doctor made a "DEADLY" MISTAKE that could cost him his job!

when my ENT told me to get vaccine, i asked questions such as why, and all that... and he said to prevent from getting menigitis... and couldn't do the surgery until i had it done!

That's SO true, doctors do make mistakes, even medical mistakes or delay in testing. I remembered back where I had a lousy doctor in the emergency room who didn't know what the heck he was doing and prescription me the wrong medicine, and I end up hospitalized at another hospital, all because he couldn't even communicate with me even when he wrote everything down in poor handwriting, refusing me an interprepter that I needed and lack of testing.

:werd: I smell lawsuit.
I have met the parent who doesnt believe in immunization, her kids have no records. I start to wonder if that parent does not believe too, and doesnt know immunization is required, then Doctor is responsible to ask for records, and to discuss about it before.

I am so sorry she's only 7 :(

well as quoted somewhere that the mother "I keep forgotten to get her vaccinated" I'm not too sure if i did see that somewhere not in those exact words but similar... (don't throw rocks at me hehe wink)

:werd: Exactly what I was thinking too, and I'll also say that both the parents and the doctors were irresponsible period, it's important for the doctors to get all the information about the patient before going through any type of surgery, otherwise something may happen in the result of not being able to save the patient at the end, same applies with allegery, all doctors must ask the patients if they're allgery to any type of medicine before going ahead with a surgery, also it's important to know their patient medical history as well too...even if they don't have it on the patient record, they still have to ask questions in order to make sure the surgery goes smooth, etc....

I agree with most members in this thread, good points too ;)

Dr still shouldn't have gone ahead to surgery til her records on Dr's hand.

Yeah I've noticed that but still the doctor should never had gone thru the CI surgery even if they didn't have proof that the daughter had her vaccinated shots...Doctor should have said " well we will just have to wait until your daughter has her vaccinated shots first before we are able to go ahead with the CI surgery" but unfortually it didnt happen that way....

Yep. I forgot to mention that also in Australia if you get all your kids vaccinations up to date you get something like a one off payment of $200 from the government. They did this because they had a big problem with people falling behind in children's vaccination schedules because not motivated, too busy or forgetful. Money motivates alright!

You had a great doctor, I'm happy for ya really....

I agree both above. And I have seen alot parent wants their kids to have CI, grows rapidly. If that parent just admitted she kept forgetting to bring her records, if i was in her shoes I would ask Dr what is concerned with her records about, and wouldn't have signed permission to have her in surgery I care my kids more than having CI on them. But again, Dr still should refuse to go ahead without her record.

No wondering, one of parents flew with her daughter to Seattle for having CI on her daughter there instead of here, in Anchorage, AK, cuz of Dr's experience is poor here when I asked why there.

Wow that's pretty bad huh?? well maybe this mother of the 7 years old didn't know the consequences but still the doctor shouldn't have perform the surgery... was he greedy for money?? who knows!!

Doesn't making the hell sense so many issued... compare w/her parent and Doctor...
IMPORTANT FIRST THING, BE ASKED DO YOU HAVE HEALTH RECORD OF IMMUNIZATION , IF NOT.. THEREFORE WILL NOT PROCEED UNDER THE KNIFE!

Why they are go forth under knife without the immunization vaccine?

Sumth'n fishy.... Doesn't make sense!!

May Doctor want $ or.... Parent want pressure and go do it for her daughter implanted the ci.. ? Which one speaking of... both STILL faults...

I would say... Needless, as well said Banjo's comment... Really quite good!

I'm not accusing rest to CI'ers ok...
Just my POV.. Please don't attack my POV .. Stay out of my own opinion.

Thank you.
