A Cure For Hearing Loss? WHAT?!

They have been talking about this sort of thing for years. I have also heard about gene therapy for some kinds of hearing loss, or for "regrowing" the hair cells in the cochlea. But you know what, these things are many many years away, if they ever happen. What good is it to spend you entire life not hearing, hoping that some day something will happen that will be better than what you have now? Ok, so when you are 60 they release this technology, you have spent 60 years not hearing, how are you going to train your brain to understand? How successful is that going to be? Are you going to regret not doing it for the last 59 years? The time is now!

Some people are perfectly happy being deaf. Not everyone has a desire to be hearing.

CIs are paid for by insurance, so they don't cost a dime.

Hearing aids, on the other hand, are not covered by insurance and cost an arm and a leg.

Some (most) people have to pay out-of-pocket/deductible expenses before insurance covers 100%. I, myself, have a $2,000/per year out-of-pocket deductible. You can't say HAs or CIs don't cost a dime.

A $2,000/year deductible is considerably less expensive than paying $50,000+ out of pocket for CI surgery, mappings, etc.

Yes. But it STILL costs more than a dime. Be careful of what you say, as it could mislead others into thinking they wouldn't have to pay a single cent. A single cent can mean something to some.

I'm sure people are smart enough to know that deductibles are involved when it comes to insurance. I'm not the kind of person who assumes otherwise.

Here we go again. Why should we assume everyone on this forum knows? Even so, it STILL costs something. Sorry if this gets a little sharp, but I get tired of people who spout something that isn't entirely true. And, we have had posters here who don't always know what the deal is. Anyhow, this is getting off-topic.

Anyways, Botts, I have auditory nerve damage as well as you. Hearing aids have helped me as well. Good thing! :)

Thanks AlleyCat. I am pretty sure there are several of us here with that. :)

You're the one who started the off-topic discussion by commenting on my post.

If you get tired of people saying things that aren't entirely true, you might want to stop reading forums and message boards because it happens all the time.

If a person wants to learn more about insurance coverage for CIs, their best option is to work with their CI center since they have insurance specialists on staff who can answer specific questions.

Actually, the OP's original post was about laser treatment. Not about whether a CI would cost a dime.

I was responding to deafdude's post who said:

That part of my comment was on-topic since I was comparing the efficacy of relying on an unproven treatment for hearing loss vs. opting for a CI.

On the other hand, it can improve tintituas (sp?) I really do think that a real cure for hearing loss is probaly never ever going to happen. Man has never cured a disabilty. Plus, I mean overall hearing loss is not that big of a disabilty. They should work on helping things like Aleizheimer's or profound CP or mental retardation first!

This is most certainly the feeling I'm getting from learning about everyone here... even before Adam was here I never thought of HL or deafness as a disease that needed a 'cure'... but that's just how I see it...

You are absolutely right some people like me are perfectly happy being deaf. We don't want to get "fix" by the hearing professionals like Doctors and AG Bell Audists or hearing parents. It is bad enough for me to scream at them to stop this torturing us to be like the hearing people.

yeah

I was just thinking about the history of deaf

Like sterilizing them so they won't have any more deaf children.

and now we have abortions (if they can do genetic testing for deafness), stem cells, designer babies.

We may be perfectly happy, but one day we may disappear from the face of this Earth.

This is not even close to the same as giving a person a device that can help them access sound. If my child had a vision loss I would get them glasses and if they had a limp I would get them a crutch. It does not mean that they are unhappy with how they are, it is simply a tool to help them in the world.

The idealogy is one of the worst in the history of Deafness. All because of AGBell...blah!!!

Don't believe it

Many businesses making money for offering nothing but just lie. They are taking advantage of your disparate need for cure. If you need to know the truth contact Tinnitus association, they are working hard to find cure for Tinnitus and they will know it before you do. Try to contact local hearing or Tinnitus association in you area to discuss issues regarding the hearing.

I would love this seriously.

In my left ear I'm COMPLETELY DEAF!! and my right ear is so-so but with a hearing -aid it's better.
I don't know if that's true or not but it would make me a happy person.
I won't need the lyrics for songs anymore. I have to have them in front of me
when I listen to a new song, I have to memorize it and hear it myself over & over again until I'm comfortable with the song.

I know there are people who are perfectly happy with being deaf and others aren't.
