Study of Low Level Laser Therapy and Word Recognition in Hearing Impaired Individuals

Needless to say, this is literally AMAZING that they're able to produce 10 dB improvement in adults and as much as 25 dB improvement in hearing in children. Hair cell regeneration FINALLY?! Are you kidding me?!

I can't begin to say how excited I am about this. I know it's too early to tell about its effectiveness overall - but they've DISCOVERED IT WORKS!!!

oh geez,not another one.

Makes me think of the snake oil salesmen of the Old West. :)

Haha...I know...plus, I had that feeling myself (what the heck kind of puffery is this?) in addition to the initial excitement. It is nice to fantasize, however. ;)

I am just waiting for the whole stem cell thing for my auditory nerves.

I posted about this when I joined this forum. If it worked, who would want a CI when they can naturally improve their hearing cheap and easily? Id also be hearing about it all over but I never heard about it till recently. One case study showed that no one improved their audiogram after laser treatment.

CIs are paid for by insurance, so they don't cost a dime.

Hearing aids, on the other hand, are not covered by insurance and cost an arm and a leg.

They have been talking about this sort of thing for years. I have also heard about gene therapy for some kinds of hearing loss, or for "regrowing" the hair cells in the cochlea. But you know what, these things are many many years away, if they ever happen. What good is it to spend you entire life not hearing, hoping that some day something will happen that will be better than what you have now? Ok, so when you are 60 they release this technology, you have spent 60 years not hearing, how are you going to train your brain to understand? How successful is that going to be? Are you going to regret not doing it for the last 59 years? The time is now!

You need good auditory nerves for CI>

If you don't have an auditory nerve than hearing aids won't work either. You would be amplifing sound to nothing. That would be like running down a hall into a brick wall. The nerve is the "bridge" to the brain.

I have damage to auditory nerves and hearing aids do work for some benefit actually.

Can you tell me more about the kind of hearing loss? I'm not at all familiar with this syndrome (reading right now though)

I already had severe hearing loss which is just genetic.

Herpes zoster which is nothing but chicken pox virus reactivates and does damage to the auditory nerves.

That put me down to profound.

On the left side, it also got the facial nerve, which accounts for my somewhat lopsided appearance.
