7 Children die in Brooklyn fire

I just read this a few hours ago....OMG so horribly horribly sad. This poor father, and I am sure the mother are going to be so so lost. The mom might feel guilty as she could not save her children. All the beautiful faces on those children and now they are gone.

I wonder if their home had smoke detectors. These fires seem to be happening more frequently and lot's of people are dying.

If you do not have a smoke alarm now, please go get one.

Heartbreaking.

My roommate's 16 year old son lost his friend to a fire about 2 months ago and of course, we lost an ADer to a fire. I am with Angel.

The press reported that there was a smoke detector in the basement only, and maybe not functioning; no detectors on the first or second floor. :(

I think they reported they only found the basement one.

It was such a bad fire the upstairs ones were probably destroyed.

"Fire marshals say they kids, who were sleeping upstairs, might have had a chance if there were smoke detectors on the first and second floors of the home, instead of the just the basement. That may have alerted them to the hot plate in the kitchen that had shorted out. "

I think back when the kids lived at home, I thought I was truly prepared for any emergency. Smoke alarms, rope ladders, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, CPR training etc. BUT....my kids could sleep through the house alarm going off, sometimes my hubby too. Looking back I definitely should have had some of those super loud, strobe light fire alarms. I bought one right after Mark passed away. If any good can come out of these tragedies, let them remind people that it can happen to them so be prepared. Don't take any chances with the lives of your family.

Did the family own the house or were they renting it? If it was a rental the fire department should of made sure it had enough smoke alarms. I had a 2 family house and rented out the first floor and when I brought the house the fire department came it checked to see if there smoke alarms on all the floors . There was and in the basement too.

According to the link:

"The family moved to Brooklyn from Israel about two years ago because Ms. Sassoon wanted to reconnect with her large extended family. She moved into the house she grew up in, owned by her parents, who spend summers in Deal, N.J., and winters in Florida."

So, I don't know if that's considered a rental or not.

Oh this has to be really horrible for the parents , they did not put in enough smoke alarms. This is so sad .:( The poor family and right before Passover .

A few days ago, my apt manager used that reference to warn all of us tenants to check the smoke alarm batteries. I emailed back saying, "I could not hear the beep." Next day, electrician came in my apt with my permission. I did not know that my regular smoke alarm was replaced with a new smoke alarm and strobe light in the hallway. That was unexpected. I think that they finally got my message.

But what about your bedroom , can you see the strobe light in there if you leave the door open?

I always leave my bedroom door open plus I have a dog who hears very sharp. He will be very wild when he hears the loudest beep.

I have my bedroom's close at night . I have talking alarm ., I was hoping I would hear it better than I beeping but I don't think I will. I should have one like you have in my bedroom and hallway .

Update: electrician came in my apt with my permission earlier today. He installed two more strobe lights.. one in my bedroom and other in my office room.
