5% increase of bike thefts in Chicago

for those who use bike in anywhere in uk do same....some arse pinched mine

Don't park in the public at all. I carry bicycle with me all the times even in store, and my work office allow me to carry my bicycle and park in the lobby.

Lol get a ugly bike no one will be caught to ride, and your problem is solved.

I have seen a lot of ugly bicycles with no wheels, or saddle in SF area, even I witnessed a thug tried to steal bicycle in front of crowded people on busy street. That bicycle locked really well, and he gave up trying as I was standing and watch. :hmm:

:shock:theifs can get their hand lobbed off in some areas of the world. Might as well put navistar on those things. Call company to shut down bike once it's stolen :cool2:

Use U lock on bicycle.

i use a motorcycle lock (U lock, a big one) for my bicycle...al the others were rubbish, dont have a MB now so i use this one, big and bulky so i carry it in the back pack (a light bag)...silly i know, but effective
i just don't think the cost of getting a new bike lock (smalll) for bikes is worth it, they are expensive now...grrr so i forget it and use the MB one instead

The ones I have cost me $45 each, and they're good, but I want the NY style locks, but problem is, they cost too much. I'll make do with the ones I have now.

Video or no care.

Of course you should always lock your bike if you're going to leave it anywhere, but this is an additional trick you can use to mess with anyone trying to steal it (assuming they're going to steal it by riding away on it):

[this is obviously useless for the single speed/fixie crowd. But those people are so cool they already know all the tricks:0]

Step 1: As you get close to where you want to stop, shift so that your chain is on your biggest chain ring in front and your biggest cog in the back. Pedal to your stopping place so your chain is firmly on that ring and that cog.

Step 2: Stop your bike.

Step 3: Shift (just using your hand controls) as though you want to move the chain to the little ring and the smallest cog. But only shift with the shifters. Don't pedal after you've done this. You don't actually want the chain to move to the small ring and cog.

Step 4: Get off the bike, lock it up. Go do whatever.

Step 5: when you get back on the bike, make sure to move the shifters back so they match the gears where you left your chain.

You can just do the front, or do the front and back. For the front, if someone tries to grab your bike and ride off on it without adjusting the shifters, they'll try to pedal but the bike won't respond. There's too much slack on the chain, so pedaling won't engage the gears. If you do both front and back, the chain may even fall off.

But again, you have to remember you've done this, otherwise you'll be the sucker when you get back on your bike.

He's actually got a pretty good system of his own, so he's fine. It's MY bicycle I'm worried about-- Trek bicycles are a high value target for thieves, so I need to ensure it stays protected.

No, Not what I mean.

I was talking about his business. Customers would buy bike from Derek after their bike got stole.

My friend thought that small town was nothing. Syracuse is not that big city. He left his nice bike out locked with the pole. In a few minutes he came back and his bike was gone but his locker was still there.

I stopped buying bikes for my boys after they were stolen, time and time again....even tho' they had locks on them. One time, we found my son's bike a few blocks away,, just thrown down.

Yeah, I had customers buy bikes from me. Bikes get stolen and then they have to buy another one from me. Not exactly the ideal way for me to get business. I hate to take advantage of that.
