My girlfriend is currently working 5 days----8 hours a day. She will soon be starting a new job working 4 days a week-----10 hours a day. Either way, it comes up to 40 hours a week.

It does not really matter what the job is. I'm curious if you'll prefer working 4 days a week for 10 hours each or 5 days a week for 8 hours each??? If given choice, I'll probably prefer 4 and 10 so that I have a full day free.

What about you and why??

I would do 4 :). I used to work three 12 hour shifts. That was great! I could go place when I wanted. Now I work two jobs. I job 7 days a week, and the other 2 times a week. My full time job has never refused me any time off though. :)

With kids, i prefer 5 days of 8 hours per day so i have other errands with do with kids and home. If i have no kids then 4 days a week.

4 days a week..whenever we have a 3 day weekend due to holiday, I feel very motivated to return to work.

I prefer more hours, fewer days because I hate to commute.

In my work, rarely do I get 40 hours per week. What few hours I do work, are a mix of day and evening hours.

Some weeks Hubby works only three days (not enough), and some weeks six days (very tiring).

If he and I worked normal hours like normal people it would be amazing.

My daughter works mixed hours and days. My SIL is back to work just part time right now. When he is able to go back full time it will be on a rotating shift, 24/7 (the plant never closes).

If we could all work the same hours and days it would be great. We could actually plan time to do things together. :D

There are times where 4 day is more beneficial then 5 day. With a 4 workday, I save a full tank of gas at end of month, and I get to spend an extra day with kids. OTOH, its harder to do chores and errands with 10 hr workday as you already waste 1 hr for travel time and miss many dinners with family. Is this ok with you, but make up for it with 3 day weekend?

EDIT: This is from a different viewpoint, but I thought it would be interesting to add.

I think they should give businesses a chance to work as many hours as they want, but take legal precautions for the employees overworking. They should also lay out guidelines for weekend workers or overnight shift workers, etc so someone isn't working for 15 hours a day.

The reason why I say this is that it may help re-stimulate the economy to earn money in bad times. Shops in other countries don't have a closing time, the mall might be open for 24/7, not to mention all the fast food or restaurants that are already open. This would A) bring in more revenue for the business, b) bring in more taxes for the state to use. There have been times I wanted to buy something but the store was closed at 9pm and I would have to wait until the next day or Monday, and I just said forget it or bought it on the internet from another state instead.

When I was in Pittsburgh, I noticed they have a law that you can't sell automobiles on Sundays. I found it very strange since being from California where automobiles can be sold 7 days of the week. I understand there may be some overlying factor that is the reason for not allowing them to do so. There are also some chinese restaurants in Southern California that follow similar guidelines as they do overseas, by having "midnight specials" where you can order all the daily specials for 50% off at 10p.m.

I wouldn't mind being able to work a minimum of 4-5 days a week, but with possibility to work on the weekends with ample reason.

Illinois has the same law. Car dxealerships are closed on Sunday. That helps private party owners, but then there is less taxes for state.

I think that many places closes at 9 pm because they don't make enough sales to justify paying someone to work graveyard shifts.

I bet many businesses would be hit with big loss if they gave 50% off after 10 pm. You see, why would I want to eat at 9 pm when I can just wait 1 hour and get 50% off??

Just my 2 cent.

4 days is better than 5 because I have no kids. I can always eat dinner later, no worry.

When I do have kids in the future, my perspective may change. I may prefer 5 over 4.

When I was single, I worked 10 hour days....then at least 2 or 3 days a week, 2-6 more hours overtime....My Townhouse remained cleaned (no Kids!)...and having 3 days off was great!....But for those with kids, my guess is an 8 hour day and no overtime would be best....Some parents would have a problem with finding someone to watch their kids after school if they worked days and 10 hour shifts. Some child care facilities are open late....but the kids would not see their parents much and miss out on quality time, not a good idea is my way of thinking.....

I prefer to work longer days but less of them. For a period I did this in my last job, but then my manager wanted me to be in the office on all five days in case anything urgent cropped up on the 5th day. I agreed to do five days to please my manger, but regretted it soon afterwards.

I work six days a week, 6-8 hrs a day. Not fun. I have no weekends.

HA HA HA .. oh wait ,, you are being serious are you?! I have no problem working extra for that extra money, but problem is many places have the hours on a budget. If they go over, management will make cuts either via staff or less hours available to work. or how you need preapproval, and not spur of the moment thing working extra when you want that fits your lifestyle but management went home for the day. sadly, this is th truth for many places, and if you claim you dont need approval or can work OT anytime you want, then take a good look at your current pay..... the answer is there... lower then norm....

I remember I worked ten hrs five days a week in steel factory. Thank goodness, I was 20 at the time...I could handle it. Not today... 10 hrs days are tough... Sometimes, I had to go in on Saturday for half of day. My boss sure did appreciated my work. We got stoned, together.

I wish they would stop debating to change the school days from five to four so we can teach longer days in four days. I would SO love having Fridays off along with the weekends because some things are closed on the weekends and I need to do errands on a weekday.

However, it will never happen because at the deaf schools, the last day of school is usually shorter so they can transport the kids home.
