22 Maps that show how Americans speak English totally different from each other.

You guys = yooze-gize (hard G), slurred together like one word

Bonus question:

Long Island or Lawn-guy-len? :giggle:

TCS (from Michigan) says drinking fountain.
I say water fountain.
In the Navy we all say scuttlebutt.

No wonder people in Florida compliment my light southern accent. I found the author to be spot on in my case, see how you compare to the rest of the country.

For those of you who have never heard before, this article may give you an informative insight on how deep some oral pronunciations are. Sorry, didn't find a version for ASL variations.

Thats ok about ASL accents. Too bad that they should have one.

Lots of people can tell where my family comes from. Ah, you NYC or LI? Deaf peeps can tell that i am from NY, either nyc or LI but many of them assume that was NYC. all ASL accents are different all over USA too. :)

Coming up, I remember using the word, "davenport" and this was in Minnesota.

Really its accent, just same with ASL that got them too. I used to work and deal with plenty of Deafies all over the USA, man a lot variety in ASL accent.

Sorry, yes.

Woostah

whoa...... that's not even close to how it's spelled.. I hate it when that happens. why won't a word matches up with pronunciation? :mad2:

This is the part of reason why computer generated captions aren't accurate and sucks big time, computer can not recognize difference when it comes to accent. In future maybe, and hope so!

I don't think it's generated by computer.

I've always had trouble with that word:giggle:

My parents are from Ireland and they say "tree" for the number three.

tree-tree-tree-four for 3334

With proper names, it's common, especially since they have so many different countries of origin.

We're bad about it here in the South, too.

In SC:

Cooper River (Kuppah)

Huger (U-G; as in you-gee)

Gaillard (Gil-yard)

Beaufort (Byoo-ferd)

Snowden (Snow-don; not like snow but like "ow!")

Hasell St. (Hazel)

Mazyck St. (Maa-zeek)

In North Carolina, the city is Charlotte (Shar'-let); in Michigan, their city is Charlotte (Shar-lot').

:giggle:

You mean like the old joke about "phonetically"?

Up here, it's "Tronna", not "Toronto".

Wustah-sure.

There's ads on TV to visit Massachussets right now, and the guy keeps mentioning the "Berkshires", but saying "berk shears" whereas in the original Berkshire in the UK, it's pronounced "Bark sure". But hey, it's the local pronunciation, it's nobody's place to tell them how to do it.

You never heard of it?

Pay a visit on Youtube and see for yourself. They got them and the caption is way off.

Yes, there are computer generated caption. It is fairly new more and more companies are trying to save money trying experiment using voice recognition technology in attempt to replace the real person caption.

As of right now computer generated caption is not even close to perfect, too many errors because computer can't recognize difference in accent. That why they sucks.

I don't think it's generated by computer.
