13 States Will Raise Their Minimum Wage in 2014

The residents of IL make $8-something.... the governor wants to increase it to $10/hr. We need that kind of support, but the problem is, the GOP here in IL opposes it. Bunch of A-holes.

Let's not blame all the ills of government on Republicans....it's a convenient scape goat on this forum, I know, but they pay guards that work in armored cars only $9.00 and they get shot at. I don't think people in low paying jobs run the risk of being shot as much as guards in those vans, yet they're only paid $9.00...they're trained in firearm handling, shooting, safety, how to look out for danger and they're willing to put their life on the line to deliver someone else's money - far more than what they earn...of which the highest salary is $11.00 an hour. I might add they only carry a revolver and are forbidden to have a back up gun even though they could face robbers with Uzis. I don't see why someone that flips a burger or works in the stock room should be paid more than office employee with a degree behind them...who by the way, don't earn much more...at least in the federal sector.

I expect prices to go up and employees to get their hours cut, or let go, due to the new high cost of running the business. Low paying jobs were meant for students because they were intended to be short term jobs. Honestly, if you're not hustling to get a real job, it's not the tax payers fault. Doing work that requires neither education, training or skill, doesn't pay.

I'm straight up Democrat..... wouldn't support the GOP even if someone paid me to do it.

Yes, we are back to square one.

Probably worse than before because this not only increases employer costs and wages but also increases the FICA contribution as well. Raising the minimum wage makes the poor poorer.

It has always been that way. Even 25 years ago, nobody could support themselves on minimum wage which was at $2.95 at the time. That's why my mom told my brother and I to finish school so we wont be earning just minimum wage. I think no matter what, people on minimum wage will never be able to support themselves. That's why education is the key but there are many people out there who screw it up and drop out of school.

Exactly. There will always be poor people. All minimum wage increases do is raise costs.

Another reason why employers try to keep some wages low ...

This reminds me of someone I encountered a while back. They worked at McDonalds and said that fast food workers should be paid around $14 a hour. Excuse me? $14 a hour for a group of people that consists VASTLY of drop outs or high school graduates and that's it? I think not. When I first attained my Bachelors degree I started at $14.00 a hour. A BACHELORS! I have a dear friend of mine who has a Bachelors in Social work and started at $14 a hour. So I simply raised the question to him... Do you think that you should make the same pay as someone who exerted time, effort and money ( lots of money these days! ) in a degree and you who has put hardly any effort in your education should make the same? He sat there speechless of course. Yes, I know not EVERYONE in fast-food is a drop out or a high school graduate. Again I state a lot of the work force in there are. If fast-food workers made $14 a hour I'd definitely have to reconsider my career choices!:hmm:

I definitely support raising the minimum wage, it's far too behind.

Same here, but not on my top priority. I just want to find a job that is friendly for employee with Usher Syndrome, especially me so I know deaf schools are friendly for employee with Usher Syndrome.

I have other concern, the income equality could be bad for our economy.

if you talk about poor workers.

In Canada, they have conservative government and they increase the minimum wage regularly, usually pegged with inflation and the economy is much better than in the US.
