12 Food Additives to Avoid

Including something new in a food isn’t always a good idea, especially when it comes to your health. Here are 12 additives to subtract from your diet:

(Please understand these are not my assessments, but those by MSN Health and Fitness. My comments and recommendations are in my comment below.)

1. Sodium Nitrate (also called Sodium Nitrite)

This is a preservative, coloring, and flavoring commonly added to bacon, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meats, smoked fish, and corned beef. Studies have linked eating it to various types of cancer.

2. BHA and BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydrozyttoluene are used to preserve common household foods. They are found in cereals, chewing gum, potato chips, and vegetable oils. They are oxidants, which form potentially cancer-causing reactive compounds in your body.

3. Propyl Gallate

Another preservative, often used in conjunction with BHA and BHT. It is sometimes found in meat products, chicken soup base, and chewing gum. Animals studies have suggested that it could be linked to cancer.

4. Monosodium Glutamate (MSG)

MSG is an amino acid used as a flavor enhancer in soups, salad dressings, chips, frozen entrees, and restaurant food. It can cause headaches and nausea, and animal studies link it to damaged nerve cells in the brains of infant mice.

5. Trans Fats

Trans fats are proven to cause heart disease. Restaurant food, especially fast food chains, often serve foods laden with trans fats.

6. Aspartame

Aspartame, also known by the brand names Nutrasweet and Equal, is a sweetener found in so-called diet foods such as low-calorie desserts, gelatins, drink mixes, and soft drinks. It may cause cancer or neurological problems, such as dizziness or hallucinations.

7. Acesulfame-K

This is a relatively new artificial sweetener found in baked goods, chewing gum, and gelatin desserts. There is a general concern that testing on this product has been scant, and some studies show the additive may cause cancer in rats.

8. Food Colorings: Blue 1, 2; Red 3; Green 3; Yellow 6

Five food colorings still on the market are linked with cancer in animal testing. Blue 1 and 2, found in beverages, candy, baked goods and pet food, have been linked to cancer in mice. Red 3, used to dye cherries, fruit cocktail, candy, and baked goods, has been shown to cause thyroid tumors in rats. Green 3, added to candy and beverages, has been linked to bladder cancer. The widely used yellow 6, added to beverages, sausage, gelatin, baked goods, and candy, has been linked to tumors of the adrenal gland and kidney.

9. Olestra

Olestra, a synthetic fat found in some potato chip brands, can cause severe diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and gas. Olestra also inhibits healthy vitamin absorption from fat-soluble carotenoids that are found in fruits and vegetables.

10. Potassium Bromate

Potassium bromate is used as an additive to increase volume in some white flour, breads, and rolls. It is known to cause cancer in animals, and even small amounts in bread can create a risk for humans.

11. White Sugar

Watch out for foods with added sugars, such as baked goods, cereals, crackers, sauces and many other processed foods. It is unsafe for your health, and promotes bad nutrition.

12. Sodium Chloride

A dash of sodium chloride, more commonly known as salt, can bring flavor to your meal. But too much salt can be dangerous for your health, leading to high blood pressure, heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.

Everything even food is bad for everyone period.

It is close to impossible to avoid all additives unless you limit yourself to whole foods. I don't have that much willpower. Or time.

Everything can give you an unhealthy stuff, really everything.

I'm not gonna to avoid it, just my business to eat whatever I want.

Important, just keep eat at daily value, such as 2,000 to 2,500 calorie, also exercise if you have time.

I drank sugary soda about 4-6 cans per day and my weight is still stable or little reduce.

U exactly right!
Hard to avoid these additives in our food..how can we,
anyways?..
I guess you could go organic but expensive!
If we avoid all these, we could starve, huh?:dunno:

I don't drink a pop with carbonated. I used to drink it a lot. I stopped it. I don't eat any sugar. I always use a sugar-free. I always check on nutrition facts to see what I can eat or not. I must watch the Calories, Fat grams, and carb. I prefer to be low carb and low fat. I don't believe if sugar free and low fat can cause cancer. You have to eat a good health as fruits and vegetables and herbals. I don't like to eat too much on sodium. I like to eat a sweet. I have to be careful about sugar's amount. On Xmas month always have a desserts and cookies. I can eat them for once time in a years.

The best is eat fruits and vegetable will prevent of cancer. You have to drink an Antioxidant with tea. I heard Vitamins supplement aren't good for liver. I am not sure. I am still researching more.

I watch what I eat, but those guidelines are still unreasonable. If they are so "dangerous", why hasn't the FDA pulled them?

It's hard to avoid those indegredents when they are almost in every food product. The only alternative to avoid those is to buy everything from a natural food store and that's not financially possible for the general population. It could cost 2-3 times more than the grocery at a regular food store, what choice do we have?

Yes, I'm surprised when I saw many additives and chemical on the food labels when I was in USA last year because many food additives are banned in European countries including Germany. The children and health issue is the reason, why they banned some food additives.

That's why I have no problem to aviod any foods additives
.

Pepe, if you want specified bad additives to be outlaw then go discuss with FDA, it wouldn't work out at best way but sugar is completely impossible to outlaw, we need consume some of sugar to balance on sugar blood and varies of food need sugar to make taste so properly.

If specified additives are outlaw then food companies will find other additives that will make worse or more expensive, such as increase of food price, also life is really short and you have gotta deal with that.

Just go on your own and read label, enjoy grocery shopping, or move to Europe if your money is permission to go.

Yes, white or brown sugar is not possible to ban because we need white or brown sugar for bake the cookies, cakes, sweets, etc.

White or brown sugars are not belong to additives food but just natural. Sugars come from sugar cane.

Thanks for sharing that information with us, PePe LePew. ;)

liebling yea usa has many.. the plm is they need to make money.. if they banned those like you say, then usa wont make any money.. that is reason..

another reason, FDA.. if someone try to discuss something, FDA is hand off because it is not thier job.. FDA is focus med RX and other i dont remmy.. other department is focus alot things like we discuss here.. yes it will! they will take care of it! wow! even they can tell them to stop or closed business! whoa! strict powerful department!
SADLY is that many company avoid those department then make money! rme!
true ! but one food store which i found in this alldeaf.com.... as someone made one thread..it say Trader Joe... that store made it throught one strict department! now that store is safe to sell and make money and all food are real! no chemical at all!
Congrat to Trader Joe! ayay but i hope that store will open in TX.. i dont know if they do plan that.. i check that webiste and not say yet.. oh well..
