Would-be bride, 107, seeks first husband

BEIJING (Reuters) – A 107-year-old Chinese woman who was afraid to marry when she was young has decided to look for her first husband and hopes to find a fellow centenarian so they will have something to talk about, a Chinese paper reported.

Wang Guiying is worried she is becoming a burden to her aging nieces and nephews since breaking her leg when she was 102 and had to stop doing chores like washing her clothes.

"I'm already 107 and I still haven't got married," the Chongqing Commercial Times quoted her saying. "What will happen if I don't hurry up and find a husband?"

Born in southern Guizhou province the child of a salt merchant, Wang grew up watching her uncles and other men scold and beat their wives and often found her aunt crying in the woodshed after an attack, the paper said.

"All the married people around there lived like that. Getting married was too frightening," she said of an era when Chinese women had few rights and low social standing.

Many also had their feet bound in an excruciating process aimed at making them look more dainty and marriageable.

After Wang's father, mother and older sister died, she still shied away from marriage. Instead she moved to the countryside and survived as a farmer until she was 74 years old and no longer strong enough to work in the fields, the report said.

Her nephew in the booming city of Chongqing then took Wang in, but she is worried he and her other nephews and nieces are too old to take care of her now even the youngest is 60.

"My nephews and nieces are getting older and their children are already tied up with their own families and I am becoming more and more of a burden," she said.

Local officials have said they are happy to help Wang search for a 100-year old groom, and suggested her family get in touch with old people's homes to find candidates, the paper said.

who says someone has to get married before they pass away? there are plenty of singles in this world who die happy.

Still could be fun to experience it, even if it's only for a few years/months. Better than those 109 year old men who want 19 year old women to marry them.

Oh well... If she have a money alot of her own then i can date her for her money as if she pay me for clothes, shoes, cut my hair, and my auto insurance. I would not take her to come with me go anywhere but jux stayin home that's all, lolz!
 
I do have to agree with her and she made a point about why men are treating women like dirt in the marriage. None of us women don't want to be beat up like that or be unhappy in the marriage. It is very scary why men are doing that years ago. It is still no better than in the old days either. We still have many women missing or beaten to death from husbands and boyfriends or strangers. That is sad. Now she is trying to say she is giving a marriage a chance. Married to 100 years old man is better than 60 or 70 years old man because then the centurian man would not beat her up. That is my opinion. But still her time is short so she is making the best of it. :(
 
Well, Byrdie, why don't you marry her (I know you're homosexual) but just do it so you can be in World Guineess Record. Cool Stuff!

That is not very nice, guys....Have some respect to the elder just because she is ugly and you think she have loads of money to pay you like freeloader. You have no regard to the centurian woman who just thought she might want a chance at it. Look at older Centurian men who married to younger women. Give her a break and no joking like that. That is rude. :mad:
 
I think she should go for it...she shouldn't have to die alone without someone to love. No one should have to die alone, without anyone to love them, no matter how old they are. I hope she finds a very wonderful husband who will love her and treat her with lots of respect and love and give her a lot of happiness.
 
Awwww that is sweet, that the old woman is wanting to find a man and get married. Nobody should have to die alone without a loved person close by to hold their hands.

Im happily single and probably will stay single forever.... Im not a relationship type person lol but sometimes I wish I had someone close just to share the good and bad times with, keep company etc.

Yes, I agree that it would be nice but it's shame that 2 chinese brothers died of age 105 at few years ago. Over 100 years old are rare...

I agree-I think it's sweet that at her age she still believes in happily ever after. I admire her for not bowing to convention and getting married for the sake of it. It must have been tough for her to avoid marrying way back then, when a woman was expected to marry as soon as possible and to the best prospect she could find. I hope she finds someone to be with in her final days.
