year-old son in a car while she went shopping at the Wal-Mart in Regency.

Officers said Amanda Richmond's son was in the car for about 30 minutes with temperatures around 32 degrees.

According to an arrest report, a passerby noticed the child crying in the car and called police.

Rescuers removed the boy from the car while police went into the store to page the mother.

Richmond said she went to get a cart, and then forgot about her son and started shopping.

This happens every year in the summer and a couple of kids die of heat stroke. I don't understand how someone can "forget" a kid. :dunno2:

you can't just forget your son, what if it was summer?

true story, when we were little, mom told us to stay in the car while she goes in to pay gas. keep in mind that my sister and I were preteen so it wasn't like we were too little. the one who was too little was my brother. anyway, we all decided to go in anyhow because she was taking too long. Well, when it was time to go, I assumed my brother followed my mom, my mom assumed he followed me or my sister.. and so on. It was dark, and as she was driving, I noticed it was too quiet as my brother was always noisy. I assumed he fell asleep, but I decided to check anyway... and he wasn't there! I asked mom, "Where's ____" She panicked! first thing she did was find the nearest payphone and called the store. it was relief that he was still there. Everything was ok. It is very easy to assume something when you could be wrong. So alway check!

It's impossible to forget her child since she had her child for a year! Why can't she simply have a babysitter to watch her child at home while she's shoppin', if the mother wants a little "freedom" ?

"Simply"? Since you're a mother - you can answer your own question.

Well, I have MY own common sense, if I WANT a little freedom to shoppin' alone. It apparently that she has NO common sense....look what she have done to her child.

no common sense - that I agree. But I don't think we should say "simply" because what if a mother doesn't have any friend or family member around? It's not that simple to just call up a babysitter.

It would be ironic if she did call a babysitter and when she gets home, her baby is either injured or dead due to babysitter's negligence. and your post above will still apply to this tragedy.

She forgot her child even thou he's a year old? Oh yea...it was just a mistake so she can be excused then.

Seriously, this always fails me. How I will never understand how such people can really forget their child or children left behind. Of course when I was a kid, my mom NEVER forgot us. EVER. She may have forgot alot of things before but NEVER forgot her own kids because we are always most important to her than other things anyway. So since she's a mother, she should be aware of her son as the most important thing to her as well and yet, she "forgot" to bring him in with her as she went to get a cart, and go shopping anyway even thou it was ice cold outside, and would've froze to death. Oh yea...she just forgot him while she had alot of other stuff on her mind...hmm whatever.

WTF???? She should have taken her son with her or have a babysitter watch him for the mother so she can have alone time shopping at Walmart. She said she forgot him..I call it bullcrap! This seriously pisses me off! I always make sure to double check the back of the car before going anywhere.. I don't forget my babies!

Well, I am sure she can use her common sense to find another way. "Simply" still applies. I mean, she knows better. There's still no excuse. She could endanger her child by any means.

I don't know if ADD can do this, but I have noticed that when I have two goals in my mind that I forget one of them once I'm immersed into the action, like grabbing a basket to pull back to the car, let's say for example. I get distracted by a thought or people goofing off in the parking lot and I go off into the store. Well, I don't think it would have taken me 30 minutes before it dawns on me that I've forgotten my baby.

Even I don't have kids, I have a dog. I have forgotten him when he tied to the trolley in my back yard. I know he's only a dog, but still. And when I remembered, I freaked out. This has happened twice. Granted, I get a bit forgetful because of my medications and my medical condition. But I don't make excuses.

I'm not trying to defend the mom. I'm just offering a perspective. Of course, if she's that forgetful, she wouldn't be with him alone, right? Eh, I don't know. If you disagree with what I just posted, just shoot me. Hehe.

No excuse!

I am dad of two boys, and I can not image myself forgetting my own sons!

This is simply unacceptable one that forgets their own kid, it is called ignorance.

srly leaving a kid in a car by themselves is bad and that is not even takeing into account the weather

This does happen more than we realize. Yes - it is reprehensible, nad she should never have left the child to begin with. We live in a day and age where children, much less anyone, should be left to chance. We must be ever vigilant, but when we try to keep a look out on any child in our neighborhood and anywhere, we are accused of being nosey and to "butt out".

She should be thanking the Lo*d that her child is okay and should think twice before going shopping with her child again. Not everyone has the luxury of having a babysitter or the finances to pay for one. I remember having a heavy snowfall and lots of snow and ice on the ground for my first winter in Missouri. Hubby and mother were both at work. I have to take a 3 year old and and 18 month old to the store. No carts were outside. I had to carry both kids in and they were bulky and heavy (both were large babies and continued to be larger than normal). Never do you leave a child in a vehicle.
