Confidential means nothing to the NY Times

Interesting. Now, I know that federal law cannot trump constitutional law. How does the implied right of privacy recognized by the SCOTUS fit in to revealing confidential information which could prevent a crime? It just seems to me that any bit of legal maneuvering that permits one to...

Confidential means nothing to the NY Times

I'm not arguing law, I'm arguing my understanding of the law. My company makes a huge deal about how all of this stuff is hugely confidential. Could you refer me to the section of the law that speak to this, and how this trumps FCC regs?

    Worst phone tree ever.

Well, about that. See, there's good oprs, and there's bad oprs. And the bad oprs are divided into two. The nice ones and the incompetent ones. The bad, nice operators will take you straight to a live rep. We know phone systems like the back of our hands, and can navigate them with ease. We...

Confidential means nothing to the NY Times

I had no idea this was true. The relay I do is confidential per FCC regulations, and I may not legally disclose call content, regardless if its nature. Wow. So, TDD operators are required to spy. Glad I'm not doing that. That's terrible.

    Castrated Child Molester

That's an awfully big logical leap. Compassion can stretch in many directions. I am fully capable of being deeply grieved by the harm caused to the children, and also wanting to see a chance at a life for people who've done bad things. These are not mutually exclusive. You don't have to be...

    Castrated Child Molester

Sources? I'll cite one from Texas that would say they are. http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/csot/csot_teffective.shtm Specifically, this phrase: In 2000 Hanson found that the overall effect of treatment demonstrated reductions in both sexual recidivism (10% of the treated subjects to 17%...

    Castrated Child Molester

Of course, this is analogous to castration. But castration isn't enough, why should taking away these people's cars? We should just leave them in prison forever. They have nothing left positive to contribute to society, right? We should do that with burglars, too. And people who commit...

    Castrated Child Molester

I find it to be the height of hubris to claim that some people aren't worth helping.

    Castrated Child Molester

Most boys don't, either. In any case, common sense is great except where it doesn't apply. How can you realistically apply common sense to something as horrific as child molestation? Or murder? Or vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated? Or armed robbery? We have laws so that we don't...

    Castrated Child Molester

What about the 18 year old girl who has sex with her 17 year old boyfriend? The electric chair?

    Castrated Child Molester

Drunk drivers kill thousands yearly. Should we have a list, a registry, because they're likely to drive drunk again? Why even bother with programs like Al-anon? Why take the chance?

Confidential means nothing to the NY Times

This kind of attitude terrifies me beyond the capacity for rational thought. Let's look at it another way, and see how it appears. How about a program to monitor all relay calls, to cut down on the rampant fraud? I see no harm that this program could do to the American people. The only...

    Castrated Child Molester

Keep in mind that the term "Sex offender" is an incredibly broad term, and all the negative connotations that are attached aren't necessarily warranted. What about the 18 year old boy who gets caught having sex with his 17 year old girlfriend? Press charges, and he's on a list, and you're...

    Worst phone tree ever.

Actually, we're required to relay verbatim, unless the caller specifically requests ASL gloss (Which has never happened once for me.) The ASL training, near as I can tell, is to assist with proper voice inflection. It may not necessarily be intuitive to born Deaf people, but the tone of the...

    Lose everything

I've got marketable skills in an open job market. It's summer, so I can sleep under a hedge. I can go to the YMCA if I need to. I'll be ok.

    Worst phone tree ever.

I, and I'm sure several other CA/ROs, wince when I see 800-937-8997. Relaying recordings is generally not too bad. We can moderate the pacing, and repeat bits we don't hear properly. The problem comes when trying to navigate the phone tree. Most recordings, it's not a problem. They prompt...

    Castrated Child Molester

Well, and all right. I can accept that as an answer. But shouldn't we then be changing the sentence to life in prison? Additionally, I'm curious. Why this rather rabid stance against this particular crime? What is it about children that makes this more heinous than, say, murder?

    Castrated Child Molester

This actually speaks to a larger issue, in my opinion. According to the copied article, the fellow was sentenced to 14 years since 1983. That would put the end of his term at 1997/98. Why is he still being punished when he has paid the penalty the courts set on his crime? Doesn't it violate his...
