    hospital stay

Well actually "Kelly" can be either a guy's name or a girl's name, so we still don't know if her Dr. is a man or woman.

    Hearing/Deaf conversation etiquette?

Personally, I would use this priority (unless your Deaf friend is more on the Oral end of the spectrum). ASL Psuedo-sign (mime) Fingerspell Voice I'd use voice as a last resort because (at least for me) signing and talking at the same time is real pain. And sooner or later as the night wears...

    So lonely..

True, but in my experience meetup.com is a lot safer than Craigslist and that was my primary point. Also, without knowing the OP's location we have no idea whether there's something in their area or not; meetup is at least another avenue they can explore.

    So lonely..

I'd try Meetup.com before Craigslist. The local ASL meetup went from a handful of hearing people interested in learning ASL to being the main spot where 3 colleges with ASL courses and dozens of Deaf people meet 3 times a month. It's been fantastically successful!

FCC wants to improve quality of closed captioning.

"[Palestinians] say they want no juice in the Gaza strip" - Actual caption as seen on CNN. LOL Hopefully this directive actually results in better captions.

Legally Deaf Professional Federal Agents/Firefighters/Police Officers?

I know in NYS there's a requirement that EMT's must be able to communicate with hospital staff via radio in English, so that would exclude many deaf. That said, I did ride with a HOH EMT who was able to pass her EMT exam. She could use the radio but couldn't hear well enough to take a full BP so...

Android Phone App: Sign Language Alphabet Ireland

I don't see the ability to enter any letters with diacriticals. I know German fingerspelling includes handshapes for their diacriticals (umlauts) as well as shapes for the eset, "sch" and some other common letter combinations. Surely Gaelic speakers would need to use á, é, í, ó, and ú in order...

    Order of Sentences

That order (time, place, person, action) is not terribly different than what you might see at the beginning of a script. In fact, for some, it might be helpful to think of showing what you want to say in a quasi play or movie instead of trying to "describe" it using our linear English format.

I really love you; true ASL?

I don't know, but wow, that's one awkward hand shape!

What is an easy way to learn sign language?

I work in a middle school with a lot of mainstreamed deaf students and very few teachers or kids bother to learn ASL. And, as you noted, not having anyone to talk to is very isolating. So, I think it's fantastic that you're so willing to learn ASL! I think all the previous suggestions are...

    Best Deaf Friendly Restaurants

My wife (who is also learning ASL) is a teller at a Credit Union and she has several deaf customers who regularly seek her out for the same reason. Also, now that she has regular need to use ASL, she's eager to learn even more.

    Therapist asking for advice

Sure, but I understood the OP to mean they want to translate an incoming calling to text or ASL. Those apps don't do that do they?

    Therapist asking for advice

I'm not aware of any speech-to-ASL software. And unfortunately, I'd be willing to bet there would be two big problems with speech-to-text software. First is getting the software to recognize the audio from a phone call. Most of the programs that I've worked with are designed to take audio...

    Linguistics and ASL

You would also need to compare ASL to other sign languages that were not (theoretically) influenced by French. If you find similarities, but no common spoken-language history, you are probably looking at an attribute that is common to visual-spacial languages instead of one transferred from a...

    Interpreting Student meeting others

Yes, I made an assumption from your username. Although I'm sure there are other potential lung conditions you could have, my granddaughter (who we're raising) also has CF so that came to mind pretty quick. Keira is pretty fortunate, she seems to have a mild version. Although she also does her...

    Communication Dos And Donts

One other pointer I seldom see mentioned, is be gracious when you get corrected. Some learners get defensive or embarrassed when their signs are corrected. Take the correction and learn from it.

Novel jewelry creation can 'translate sign language into words'

Well, from what I understand from their website it's only a concept not an actual product. Even if it were in production I'd seriously doubt it's capacity to translate sign. If the decades of failing to translate spoken languages are any example there are just too many variations...

Sign Language is Slowing the Courts Down?

After having read the article I'm not sure why this is controversial. The "Sign ban" does nothing more than extend the normal "no talking to witnesses while on the stand" rule to cover non-verbal communication. Something that IMO is perfectly reasonable.
