Purple / SnapVRS / CDVRS files petition againist Sorenson

My guess is that Point To Point is an FCC term and that is why everybody uses it instead of Deaf to Deaf. The FCC probably uses it to mean any call that doesn't involve a TRS operator.

Purple / SnapVRS / CDVRS files petition againist Sorenson

That was my reaction too. They could have said "Petitioning Providers" or some other way to refer to them. "Rival Providers" is definitely inappropriate and sounds like they want to cause trouble. Like SouthFella says, now it is back in the "Rival Providers" zone and we have to see what...

Purple / SnapVRS / CDVRS files petition againist Sorenson

There's two sides to every story. Here is Sorenson's response to the Purple/Snap/CSDVRS petition: http://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/prod/ecfs/retrieve.cgi?native_or_pdf=pdf&id_document=6520223354

    A half-terped event?

Being able to sign and being able to interpret are not the same thing. Tell the organizers that you are a performer, not an interpreter, and if they want an interpreter for the rest of the show, they should contact one.

    Deaf/ Blind Interpreting

I know that one - the manual alphabet. :) And hands-on is usually called tactile ASL in interpreting workshops and stuff. :)

    ughhh....interpreter issues at school...

I just want to chime in here a bit. It sounds like you're doing it because you feel deaf people deserve pity - that it's awful for them to live with the curse of deafness. As a HOH person and an interpreter, I have seen that reality is much different. There's occasionally deaf people who feel...

    Deaf/ Blind Interpreting

It's funny, I observe so many CDI's and SSP's at Gallaudet with the deafblind people on campus, but I have no idea how that job works. I'll be looking forward to hearing the responses here too!

    caption crisis

Yes, I definitely want captions on Netflix! It is not a "right" but it would be nice if they allowed it. Or maybe some kind of account where we don't get to have streaming movies, but it costs less. (After all, why pay for something you cannot use?) The real answer, though, is to have...

No one in Texas wants to hire an interpreter!

It is the same in Texas. If you read later in the thread, that is indeed how it works in Texas. I'm not sure where the misinformation came from, but I did the research myself. Texas definitely allows a disabled person to carry their placard from car to car.

No one in Texas wants to hire an interpreter!

Of course I'm aware. I'm quite well versed in the right to interpreters. I'm also aware that in the real world, you don't always get exactly what you want. Sometimes you have to make do. If you don't want to bring your own interpreter, and the doctor won't provide one, YOU figure it out...

No one in Texas wants to hire an interpreter!

Once again you find a reason why a suggestion someone has made to help you is unacceptable. (I wasn't the one who suggested a student terp, I was just clarifying Nan's message.) I think you have received at least a dozen ideas to help you in this thread, and you have rejected every single one...

No one in Texas wants to hire an interpreter!

Yeah, but if you called the terp school, you might be able to find someone to go with you for no charge. I'm sure the doctor wouldn't object to you bringing your own interpreter. Yes, they SHOULD be providing it themselves, but the important thing is getting the care you need, not proving a...

    ughhh....interpreter issues at school...

Wow...I am really sorry you are in this situation. I wish you the best of luck. Is there anyone in your school you can talk with? Maybe a guidance counselor could give you advice on how to confront this terp? Definitely try to get this resolved by the end of the school year, so you can start...

    NIC Written exam

Agreed - "boring" is a common sign. Falling asleep is a common signal too! It's happened to me many times, usually in big meetings where the presenter is droning on and on. Only once or twice have I had a consumer snore at me. :)

Actually, I'd use JESUS-BOOK for "bible" even at a synagogue. The Bible is not a holy text of Judaism, the "Hebrew Bible" is actually called the Tanakh. So if the word "bible" came up at a synagogue, it would probably be safe to sign it as JESUS-BOOK. It's not like Jewish people don't know...

    NIC Written exam

Hmmm...can you give an example of what you're having problems with? Using the proper sign usually refers to being contextually appropriate, and making a cultural decision probably refers to taking into account the cultural differences between Deaf and hearing people. But if you give us an...
