    Gonna go NaNoWriMo

In my life time I have written just about every genre you can think of. I have written more mysteries than anything. Science fiction, fantasy, one horror novel needs some serious rewriting. Am waiting till the day I start writing to find out what I an going to do for NaNo.

Hmmm. Neither can I -- And I'm a hearie. I'm afraid everybody would get to talking about writing and nobody would get any done. When you join NaNoWriMo you put in where you live and they will show you the closest group.

There was a big thing about this a long time ago. It was determined that the I.Q. tests given favored the WASP set: White Anglo-Saxon Protestant. It therefore tended to discriminate against non-whites and even whites if they happened to be, say Catholic. Or to put it this way, If you were...

I spent the morning forming a reply to this... But unfortunately somehow the Opera search became my default search engine and it evidently allows you to accidentally delete all your tabs without warning you. Am really irritated and will not rewrite it again today.

You are very lucky to have met such a teacher. He would have been my favorite also.

As I have stated before, if not in this thread then in others. I would love to see the English language taught in schools -- In its raw form it is fully as enjoyable as ASL. It can be a very creative language. But unfortunately it is not. What is taught is how to read (poorly): How to write...

There is nothing wrong with valuing everything you learned in school. Nor is there anything wrong with valuing certain things and disdaining others. Nor is there anything wrong with learning what you were taught. My problem has always been with the latter. I never quite learned what I was...

Which is why questions, real questions, scare people. In order to find a good question you have to examine your own biases, preconceptions, etc. During the discovery of a really good question you tend to both discover and alter yourself. When you discover a great question you can actually feel a...

Correct. But English is what effects most people here. In other places the discussion might concern football. By the way English is NOT taught in schools. What IS taught is reading, writing, and grammar. But the English language is MUCH more than that.

Does not matter if she were agreeing with me or not. The fact is when you question the worth of one you open the door to question all of the others. Reasonable progression. Whether you are the type of person who reacts "OMG don't do THAT." or, like me say, "Lets do it." Is a different story...

RIGHT! When I was a kid all I ever wanted to know about was how to be a writer -- A subject I was never really taught. I was told there was plenty of time to learn that in college if I were ever smart enough to get there. When I was interested in more advanced math I was told I was too...

What you see as the demise of literacy I see as the redefinition of literacy. Being able to read and write alone does not a person either literate or illiterate. Or to put it another way one critic said of a novel, "Its only redeeming quality is that the kind of person who would enjoy...

Passing tests do NOT help you get ahead in LIFE. They help you get a better pay check. NOT the same. I am. A child should be tested for progress on that which they have studied. You see children, by their very nature are curious about the world and WANT to learn. They just don't ALWAYS...

ABSOLUTELY! In California if someone says, "Hey, Jazzy, can I have one of your aspirins?" and you give it to them -- By law you are practicing medicine without a license even though they asked you for it and it is sold over the counter freely. Although judges and legislators, and the...

I agree totally with your first sentence. What I find amazing is how culturally biased people are who believe themselves to be "Objective." In other words those things you take issue with. The bolded parts. 1. You have no right to an opinion unless you have been certified to have this...

    Idioms in ASL??

The general rule is to translate the meaning -- Not the idiom. The is true in spoken languages as well, even though both languages may have idioms that appear to mean exactly the same thing. For instance Spanish has an idiom "My aunt plays the guitar" which means about the same as, "What...
