Are you a leftie or a rightie?

Left handed, left eyed, left footed. Yes, I had problems in school. Yes I got an "F" for everything I wrote left handed. Yes, my face was slapped, my butt was spanked with a leather belt that had holes in it, and my left hand was given the ruler, for being left handed. Yes, they...

Is "So You Want to Be an Interpreter?" still good?

This is another of those authority, control, issues. Whenever anyone is upset the person who wants control, or believes they should be in control, invariably demands the subordinate person "calm down and be reasonable." However if you apply a little human understanding, and have a little...

Is "So You Want to Be an Interpreter?" still good?

Have not heard the term "WASP" in so long I wasn't sure anyone would know what it meant.

Is "So You Want to Be an Interpreter?" still good?

Unfortunately the very act of "using your hands" (When I was young a lot of jokes centered around Italians and Jews being unable to talk without waving their hands in the air like ______), using facial expressions, talking loud, (It was often said Blacks and Puerto Ricans couldn't sit down and...

Is "So You Want to Be an Interpreter?" still good?

Most hearing people, especially the professionals, train themselves to an unemotional, uninvolved, detached, robotic, mindset, somehow believing this is an attitude of superior intellect and reason. It comes from an ancient idea that humans are somehow superior to animals because they deny their...

Why Are Men Dominating the Debate About Birth Control for Women?

Higher premiums plus doctors will take the "safe" procedure that is often more expensive (In the long run, if not immediately) but has been proven in the past to be the most defensible if there is a suit. The doctors in the ER wanted to give my late wife more prednisone, even though they knew...

Why Are Men Dominating the Debate About Birth Control for Women?

But THEY often don't. MANY of them are teenagers without jobs or prospects of jobs. So society pays for the hospital bill, WIC, AFDC, and the costs of education. Sometimes for foster homes as well. I think just giving BC out free would be cheaper in the long run and if some people use it for...

Why Are Men Dominating the Debate About Birth Control for Women?

Three of my grand daughters got pregnant while on birth control that was supposed to be "Only one in a thousand chances of having a baby while on it." So I assume they each had sex at least a thousand times. So I guess if they hadn't had birth control they would have had sex only half a...

Girl who is deaf trains to be a horse jockey

There have been jockeys as tall as six foot -- Of course they were skinny as a grasshoppers hind legs. Come to think of it as a kid I was six foot (I've since shrunk) and only weighed 130 pounds (So Now I'm twice the man I used to be). Cannot conceive what hearing would have to do with horse...

Why Are Men Dominating the Debate About Birth Control for Women?

Oh! I know the answer to that one. Because by todays standards of professionalism you are not supposed to be friends with, or emotionally involved with anyone for whom you make a decision or perform a service. Doctors, lawyers, police, and interpreters are supposed to be "objective" and have...

Probation likely for busted TCU players

Not sure what Christian and Pot have to do with each other, for or against. I'd swear it said "trace amounts" and "relatively small" amounts. The president must not have had any sex life this week or we'd be getting some really important news.

Will you be killed over a leather jacket???

Stealing coats, beating people up, and even killing for them, is a fine old tradition. There was a short story written in the 1800's in Russia called "The Overcoat." It is considered a classic. People have been killed over shoes too. In the future it may be dangerous to drive around...

Holding "Grudges"...can you forgive or forget?

Insufficient data Will Rockin. Did they deliberately set out to hurt me? Was it a stranger or a friend? Did they, at the time, honestly believe they had cause? Did I really, in fact, suffer damage, or was it only superficial?

    ASL (Ancient Sign Language)

All sailors, prior to 1900, knew the value of pantomime and iconic signs to communicate with people whose language they did not speak. This is from Christopher Columbus's logs, thanks to wikipedia. Saturday, 13 October 1492: ...They brought us balls of the cotton thread and parrots and...

    Are Drug Users Persecuted?

I decided to never restrict my definition to this because it so easily allows someone in my position, who has never had "negative" or "destructive" addiction in their lives, who, for whatever reason, has never had a "socially unacceptable" addiction to feel superior to those who do have them. I...

    Are Drug Users Persecuted?

I have to disagree -- But NOT because I think you are wrong about what you are talking about. You are talking about "addiction" in its most negative form: In its destructive form. You are also talking about addiction in its most powerful form: Where the "addict" loses control of their life...

Bacteria chows down on remaining oil spill in Gulf

Another stupid question from another stupid man. If there were bacteria so powerful at eating oil that it would clean up the gulf shouldn't we get the earth inoculated against it? I mean wouldn't it endanger all the worlds supply of oil? What if it escaped and got into the Alaska pipeline?

    I was very lucky today...

The answer is street breeders who either want to fight them in the pits or think owning a tough dog makes them tough. They breed them for bad tempers and encourage them to fight. When bred for gentleness and not encouraged to fight they are one of the most mild mannered and loving breeds around.

    I was very lucky today...

Please be aware. People who keep vicious dogs often blame the victim when their dogs are quarantined or taken away. When our 5 and 6 year old grand children were attacked by a pit bull the dog was examined by a vet. He told us the good news was it did not have rabies. The best news was that...
