    Deaf culture - do's and don'ts, etc. Let's make a list!

OH MY GOD...I GET THAT A LOT...When I was in ASL classes the rules were...WE DO NOT TALK...we can outside of the class but not in class. Once class was over one day someone was signing to me something awkward and I signed and SPOKE "Can you sign that again?" ....all the while the lady disrupted...

    Deaf culture - do's and don'ts, etc. Let's make a list!

I had to set my guy straight with that...either deal with me and who I am or forget it because if I can't understand then we won't be able to get our points across!!!

    Deaf or HOH

For me, I have to say that it was a toiling "decision" that I didn't want to accept when I was a teen. Filling out job applications or scholarships for people with disabilities...I would get a little confused where you check the box as to what is your disability and for about 5 minutes I would...

When we tell people we are deaf....

I have always been open in my adult life about my being hard of hearing....not so much when I was a teen as I really didn't want to accept it because my peers wouldn't accept me so it was hard. But yes, there have been times where I will tell a person that I am hard of hearing and they will...

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

Wow....so much absorption! I love it! I had the same problem coming up where a deaf teacher, hearing teacher who knows asl and deaf/hoh students didn't want to have anything to do with me because I didn't know sign. I was stuck in a rock and a hard place because I was in speech classes after...

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

You don't feel that way? I feel that they are "allowed in" in the respect of they want to learn the language, want to learn about deaf culture, they want to interact with the deaf and whatnot. I would say they will never be "allowed in" in terms of what we experience but the fact that they...

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

LOLLOLOLOl Why so, A?@hearing husbands But I do agree with you about Hearies as one has called them wanting to learn about ASL. I'm just confused. If you want to preserve so much of the Deaf World, why have classes the culture or classes allowing hearies in or just anything like that? Maybe...

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

Well with me, I was discussing that with my guy and he was like he really didn't have a preference as long as the child was healthy. I told him that I would prefer to raise him or her hearing but school him or her about deaf culture. No conflict over here.

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

I wasn't really tripping if anybody got that impression, I was simply trying to understand and have a thread/discussion about it and thanks for the clarification, Souggy. I get it now.

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

I'm really sure I will, no doubt@Deaf Culture course. Just don't agree with most of the things being stated in the book thus far. I mean, it's okay! It's not going to deter me from becoming successful because I'm not going to marry another Deaf significant other. But like Naisho said...

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

I understand what you are saying @black/white and Jewish/Russian but what about when it comes to me? I'm classified as Deaf and growing up I read everything about it....in this case, not everything. So where is the difference where I'm looking into our culture and reading information and...

How true is your "loyalty" to deaf-world

Wow, that's interesting. Sad.....yet interesting. Oh, but I will definitely read into it more. I can understand the preservation of culture and language and it would be less of a frustration in terms of the hearing and deaf, but I don't feel that because someone is stamped certified whether...
