    Lip reading accents...

Personally, I hate sim-com. It makes it difficult to fully express myself in either language. When I really want to bawl out the kids, it's voice off.

I told you it wasn't. That should be enough.

What fj seems to not understand is that consequences can be positive, negative, or neutral.

Yes, those are consequences. And the consequence of mopping your kitchen is that now the floor is clean. You're saying "consequence" when what you really mean is "negative consequence". To that end, no, being deaf does not in and of itself negatively impact brain development.

If that's really what it's about then cochlear implants are no longer the obvious option.

And not hearing sounds is equally wonderful, as I'm sure any Deaf person would happily tell you. Don't try and turn this into a quality of life debate unless you don't mind looking like an audist. I assume you mean "spoken language". And why is that so important to you? If it's not a matter...

I suppose you don't realize just how offensive you're being, but then I suppose you don't care. Try looking up the definition of "debilitating" and see if you can't figure it out.

Careful with trying to draw parallels between genuinely debilitating conditions and deafness.

When have I ever insisted you were wrong for going the CI route? I certainly think there are parents who do it for the wrong reasons, but I don't think the decision is wrong in and of itself.

    Cochlear decison

No, the original notation was correct: language =/= speech You might be thinking of the English language and equating it with speech, but even that's not correct since English can also be conveyed through signs, the written word, Braille, Morse code, and probably other more obscure means that...

Then I misunderstood, and I apologize. I was doing neither of these things.

It came across as dismissive. The laws themselves aren't irrelevant, it was your pointing out that they exist that was irrelevant. Earlier in the thread people were discussing the difficulties they've had getting suitable accommodations from the public school system, and you posted a comment...

    Lip reading accents...

That's not the sort of thing most hearing people would notice, but I'll pay attention next time I hear someone with an accent!

    more interpreter issues...UGH!

The point is most hearing parents of deaf children aren't informed and are simply rolled by the school district, so your pointing out that there are laws intended to protect the interests and well-being of deaf children is irrelevant because deaf kids still end up getting screwed thanks to...
