Illinois Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. is challenging President Obama to honor his 2008 campaign pledge and “stand behind” legislation that would raise the minimum wage from $7.25 to $10 per hour.

“In 2011, he wanted to see the minimum wage raised to $9.50. It is now 2012,” said Jackson, who announced the Catching Up to 1968 Act of 2012 Wednesday outside of the Capitol Building.

“I’m calling on President Barack Obama to honor his campaign commitment of 2008 to stand behind legislation that raises the minimum wage for the American people a little more than he requested in 2008 because the numbers and the economy reflect that $10 is not an unreasonable starting point.”

Consumer advocate and former president candidate Ralph Nader joined Jackson in backing the bill, which he argues will help America’s economic recovery.

“Even by raising the minimum wage to $10 per hour, it would still remain below the minimum wage in today’s dollars in 1968,” said Nader.

Democratic Rep. Dennis Kucinich said Obama would win re-election if he supports Jackson’s bill.

“I’m here to say that President Obama could guarantee his election if he came out in favor of Jesse Jackson’s proposal — that President Obama could instill confidence again in the hearts of millions of Americans who are wondering, ‘Is this government really there for them or is it just there for Wall Street?’ This is an important moment,” he said.

I don't think minimum wage will increase anytime soon.
 
Kucinich is 1005 right, Obama would certainly win the election.
Then each and every "Mom and Pop" business will fold.
The American people get what they don't think ahead about.
 
Actually this is an election ploy..... Obama is the (D) candidate so (D)'s are spending election summer pointing things Obama didn't accomplish that would be distasteful to independents.... Then they will claim that this is proof of Obama's willingness to compromise.
 
That's why I don't vote. All politicians always talk bullshit.

Many businesses would shut down and that would be so wonderful for our economy wouldn' it!!:cool2::shock::hmm: What is he thinking?! It's all about him & Obama! Don't worry about the failing businesses that can't afford it. No, no problem at all!
 
He should make a standard minimum wage law for non-American workers making products for American companies. The Chinese labor connection would disappear.

People fail to understand; the boys in the boardroom will get their stock bonuses and 20% salary bumps every year, regardless of how the profit line looks. If they are fired, they will get the golden parachute to tide them over until the next opportunity. Someone is going to pay for that; either the low end labor, or the consumer.

Seriously? I guess that attitude permeates the board rooms across the country. Sending those jobs overseas to keep those fat salaries is the American way? Even if the workers here are doing 3 times the work of 20 years ago? You see, this kind of smugness is why the peasants are gonna burn down the mansions.
 
No matter how high the minimum goes, there are still problems with housing inflation, mortage crisis, health care costs, college costs, etc. If we could drag those back down, the minimum wage wouldn't be an issue.
