Yeah.
It depends on location.
I know some people who get $1,000 to $1,200 for SSI.![]()
It pays almost half of what someone would make working on minimum wage.
How can they expect people to live on such little money?
you should know that Tousi's post is referring to those who CAN work but CONVENIENTLY choose NOT to by using deaf card or whatever the card they have because "why work hard when I can make same amount from SSI by playing xbox at home?"
of course - we're not targeting to those who really need it. There are far too many disabled people who don't really need it.
I agree there are too many people who need it. I don't think deafness or blindness in and of themselves should be reasons for disability. eople who are only deaf, only blind, or only deafblind can still work with the right technology. I think it's backwards that it's easiest to get SSI as a legally blind or deaf person but much more difficult to get it with a chronic pain condition or psychological conditions that can be very incapacitating.
of course - we're not targeting to those who really need it. There are far too many disabled people who don't really need it and they are the one who are sucking up all the funds for those who really needs it. that is who you should target your anger toward to, not us. Please be considerate and look at how much we're paying tax for ya'all. You should be glad that we're generous enough to pay for it. At least we don't hide our asset to pay less tax like those rich people.
Exactly. I wish every day that I could work. If I was just deafblind I would do everything to try to get hired. But I also have debilitating pain. I can't work. I want to. I think it's totally unfair to be forced into extreme poverty just because I have a disability that keeps me from working. And that's not even taking into account the fact that it's next to impossible to get hired as a deafblind person. Even employers who believe deafblind people can work don't want to spend the extra money on adaptive technology and extra training.
Aren't programs like SSI intended to be "safety nets" for people who need them? That is, they are a way to provide for the basic necessities. They aren't expected to be the equivalent of a full-time salary.
Prior to the inception of the SSI program, what did people in your situation do?Yes, but working on the side isn't an option for all of us. So people who cannot work get forced into poverty by receiving hardly enough money to live on.

This thread is not about people cheating the system. Not everyone can work.
Why do you think old people retire. Its because people's health decline when they get older. They cant see, hear, or move around like they used to and it affects their ability to do their job.
THe government has numerous programs for single mothers who made bad decisions. Most disabled people were just dealt a bad hand. If they cant work why should they be forced into humiliating extreme poverty.
A lot of people say whatever, everybody can work but thats bullshit. Disabilities have an enourmous impact on ones earning power. Some can work, but they would probably be making more money if it wasnt for their disabilities.
Im sick of people looking down on the disabled as if they are lazy.
