Youngest child in Brittain

"'Now aged three, she has language skills months ahead of other children her age and is doing well at nursery school. Her mother, Lauren, 31, said 'It was amazing to see her reacting to noise. I was so excited and felt such a sense of relief. Her hearing is improving every day and she has become such a chatterbox.'"

Yeah, riiiiight. Project much, Lauren?

It can in some cases, but, I find it unnatural. Having a 3 yrs old who can articulate on the level with a five year old is. just. not. natural.

I'm able to hear how your average 18 mos old learns to speak (hearing child), and they're still basically babbling with getting 1 word approximations at this age. The CI child tends to be very clear in speech, and, is easily understood. But, again? Is this NATURAL for an 18 mos old to be easily understood? For some, maybe, but not on average.

I think this phenomena is attributed to the hyperfocus on AVT that is so common with implantation.

Yes, that's exactly what I have been saying. The auditory verbal method is essentially the "high powered overacheiver" way of raising your dhh kid orally.
Like you know the kind of parents who overschudule their kid and send them on playdates (I STILL don't get the point of those......god I just wandered outside and played with the neighborhood kids when I was little) and the ones who send their kids to KUMON and places like those? In other words helicopter parents.....like the auditory verbal approach is basicly "therapy as life or "life as therapy" Going to AVT sessions is NOT the auditory verbal approach. I think that the therapy can be a helpful supplement in some cases...but going "gotta be instructional, gotta cram every single moment full of "enrichment and therapy therapy therapy" Can't let the kid be a kid.
