I know some of the lurkers here, condemn ASL b/c it's literal written form translates into English oddly...and it does, there's no question about that!
However, strangely enough I can understand written ASL syntax/grammar better then I can understand some of the stuff Deaf people have written using English syntax and grammer (and my first language is English...am SLOWLY learning ASL) I have to say...English is a VERY tough language. Even native speakers can't always express themselves properly in it!!!!
Also, have any of those ASL critics ever seen those sites that have stuff in English written by people whose native language is not English? (eg Are you Feel Better? Fashion Vs. Hair, Liquor by the Grass or In Cooktaile, When Heave a Passenger of the Foot Tootle Him Meloudiously At first, but then Tootle Him With Vigor) Enough said! A poor grasp of English isn't nessarly an ASL specific problem....(hey even many oral deaf have trouble with English)
but the problems that ASLers have with English, speakers of other languages ALSO have!
