Would I be wise to pursue this investment?

I've just accept an offer to study at the University of Bath doing a postgraduate, MSc in Management. Well, this will cost me in the region of £18k to complete, but what with the recession and my hearing loss, it doesn't really make any sense for me to do it. I cannot even use the phone that well, but I can communicate with people very well if they are face to face with me.

I suppose it'd look good on my CV, but I'm pretty sure no employer in the world would ever consider giving me a professional job due to my hearing loss. It makes for depressing reading but I've almost given up wasting money on my education which will not help me in job interviews if I cannot communicate effectively which is what every job application asks for! The big issue for me is NOT being able to use the phone effectively, that is what will let me down.

I'm not talking about jobs which only require GCSEs and SATs, I'm talking about Management Consultancy and others of the ilk.

I think it's a dead end for me... What say you?

(I'm not a big follower of the deaf community since all my friends are hearing, but I've decided to login for some friendly advice from people with the experience similar to what I have explained above!)

Get off the pity pot and DO IT. :)

Obviously there is a reason why that you accepted an offer to study at the University of Bath.

Remember--once you graduate, you can immigrate to other countries that are more friendly towards deaf people.

To me it seems the educators at this university think you have potential or you wouldn't not have been offered the opportunity... regardless of a hearing loss... dont let that stop you!!!

They are right about that.

I would say that you have to find out what is the average salary a person work at a company before you apply a job someday.

It is hard for me to say that you would be a risk to get a layoff if you work for a big company. That’s why you need a backup goal for a second career. Also, I would think that you might want to run your own business someday, and you have to learn at the very bottom the exact how it starts to grow in the business after you worked for someone's company.

In short, I remember that my brother-in-law almost gave up his printing company. He saw too many printing companies. I told him not to think about it, and he has to go on and keep him busy. After five years, his company is successful. He realized that I was right about that. Well, I was hoping that he would give me a big award for that. Darn it.

I realized that you are in UK. It would be a great for you to be challenged in a hearing world. You have to stand up and let them know that you can do it because your country is not doing well with many different deaf programs. They will see you that you are doing well in the business, then they might offer some deaf programs for donations or something else someday.

There are emails, pagers, and VP as alternative ways of using the phone. It is time for hearing people to learn to adapt to not needing to use the phone every now and then. It is not gonna hurt them so I would say go for it!

Im with Shel on this one. Phone skills or capabilities will not determine your ability to have a successful career with post graduate management education. I would recommend to anybody to go to grad school, no matter the cost, if accepted to a reputable institution. :)

I maybe the odd 'hearing' one but I've got to the point in my life, I'd rather Text, Email, IM etc... anything but be on the phone... I talk to my mom on the phone b/c she's technology challanged LOL but other than that- it's much easier for me to communicate other ways... I'm lucky that in my current position I don't have to be on the phone much at ALL!!

So I think Shel90 is making a wonderful point... don't let what you feel is a communication barrier stop you from something bigger and better~~
