Woman gives birth to own grandchildren

52-year-old Texan serves as surrogate for daughter-in-law

DALLAS - A 52-year-old Texas woman has given birth to her own grandchildren — a pair of twin girls she bore as a surrogate mother for her daughter-in-law.


Marianne Thoms of Levelland returned home Wednesday, three days after giving birth to the girls at Covenant Medical Center in the northwest Texas city of Lubbock.

The twin girls, Sydney and Morgan, are still in the hospital but are in good health.

“We were glad to get them into this world,” Thoms said in a telephone interview. She said the pregnancy was pretty easy, even though it had been about 28 years since she last gave birth.

Hospital officials said they did not know whether there were other cases of a surrogate mother giving birth to her own grandchildren.

Thoms volunteered for the role on behalf of her son Shawn Reed and his wife, Traci, who could not give birth because of scarring in her uterus.

Traci Reed underwent an in-vitro fertilization procedure in San Antonio. A doctor told them it would be best to find a family member to serve as a surrogate mother to avoid legal complications over custody of the children.

Thoms, a pilot, skydiver and scuba diver, stepped forward. ”This pregnancy was much more exciting than those adventures,” she said.

I remember seeing a show on television on this. This woman couldn't have babies so her mother volunteered to be surrogate mother.
 
It has happen few times already, and its lovely gesture of this grandma!
 
That was Nice of Grandma to do that...:)

Son's sperm in his own mother's--I am trying to figure if that would be considered an incest... That also the grandmother a mother. I find this to be so sad because the granddaughters may suffer growing up knowing where they came from! :(

Are u saying that Her Son 's Sperm was In his Mother?.. I Feel Sick Now... :barf:

lol that reminds me of "friends" when Phobes' brother gave his "stuff" to his own sister and gave birth to 4 or 5 kids because her brother's g/f is too old to have babies...she's like 40 or 50...ewwww and her brother is only 30 yrs old! :ugh:

Cheri -- it was not done by actual sexual relations no -- it was done by having the son's sperm fertilized first with the wife's egg then once theyre done in vitro then they are inserted in the grandma for the next 9 mos to develop

i think its quite strange yes but wow amazing on how she would willingly be a surrogate for her son and his wife!
 
Yeah --- I cant image myself for my mom to have my "brother"'s --- :eek:

I think it's something that would require a lot of courage. But wouldn't it be a little weird for the children/grandchildren?
 
Not in God's eyes! I doubt He would approve of that craziness! its too weird really!
why not adopt??? there are millions of children waiting to be adopted, for heavens sake!
 
Hmm..at least, it stays within the family. No legal implications at all. :) It's good to see that the grandmother was more than happy to carry and give birth to her own grandchildren because her son and daughter in law were unable to conceive on their own due to scarring within the uterus as mentioned in the article.
