Britain's Prince William has broken up with his longtime girlfriend Kate Middleton after a romance conducted under the full glare of the media spotlight.

The Sun newspaper broke the surprise news on Saturday and friends of the second in line to the throne confirmed that the tabloid story was correct.

An official spokesman for William, eldest son of the late Princess Diana, said only: "We do not discuss his private life."

Middleton, the eldest child of middle-class entrepreneurs who had won plaudits for her fashionable dress sense and poise, was widely tipped to be Britain's next Queen.

She was pursued everywhere by paparazzi photographers — as Diana was.

The Sun said that the couple, who met while studying at St Andrews University in Scotland, had reached "an amicable agreement" to end their relationship.

The young couple — he is 24 and she is 25 — were seen hugging and kissing during a skiing holiday in Switzerland only last month.

William is currently pursuing his career as an army officer. His younger brother, Prince Harry, also graduated from Sandhurst military academy and is due to join frontline troops in Iraq next month.

The Sun said their relationship had been strained since William graduated from Sandhurst last December at a ceremony attended by Middleton.

A close friend of the couple told the paper: "As far as Kate is concerned, William simply hasn't been paying her enough attention.

"She is stuck in London while he is living in an officer's mess. Kate feels hugely frustrated that their relationship just seems to be going backwards at a rate of knots."

As students, William and Kate shared a house. From there, romance blossomed. She is widely recognised as being the one who persuaded the prince to stay on and complete his studies.

Royalty-obsessed tabloids were always convinced she would one day be Queen Kate. The royal family had very much accepted her in the inner circle of what they call "The Firm."

Judy Wade, royal correspondent for Hello magazine, told Reuters: "I am totally shocked. We were all convinced they were going to get married. She and William had so much more in common than Charles and Diana ever did."

"Maybe she realised the awful burden she would have been under. It's a life sentence marrying a royal."

Comparisons with William's late mother, who died in a Paris car crash in 1997, were inevitable but mostly in Kate's favour.

Diana was a troubled young aristocrat scarred by her parents' bitter divorce. Kate is the eldest child of a stable, well-grounded family.

Diana was totally unprepared for the media glare and her husband, heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles, always felt he was rushed into their doomed marriage.

Prince William splits with Kate

I am surprised! I only found out a short while ago on CNN. I thought po-po that is gossip, but did a Google News search and it is all over the place. Well that sucks! If I was going out with a guy for five years and he dumped me I’d not be happy. I hope Kate is going to be okay. I remember not too long ago there were pictures and reports how William got snockered (drunk) and was flirting big time with other women. Maybe Kate decided that was not right and gave William an ultimatum and he said nope, bye-bye.

If it is not meant to be then better split up now before getting married and make a huge mess like with Charles and Diana did with their divorce. Too much hassle.

Marrying into royality sounds like a very tough life thanks to the media. :ugh3:

Yep, My opinion is just like Shel90. They're young couples, most young couples aren't so sure about commitments those days. They're better off seeing what else is out there in storage for them. ;)

I guess some people think 25 is a young age. By the time they were 23, my parents were already married and had kids.

aww they were good looking couple. Oh well. Sorry for their split up!!

i read about this news on articles but im huge fans of royals and include his late mom the Princess Diana since 1997 because his mom is very beautiful Princess im tell you about that.

but William and Kate wanted to stay out of spotlight because last January on Kate's birthday the paparazzi who follow her at home very hounding like Princess Diana.

i know that not easy for Kate getting more bother by paparazzi and Kate got files for harassment by paparazzi i cant blame Kate.

Prince William has split from his girlfriend Kate Middleton, PEOPLE has confirmed.

The breakup was "amicable," according to a friend of the couple.

The prince, 24, and Middleton, 25, have been dating for nearly five years, after meeting at St. Andrews University in Scotland.

A spokesman at the prince's office at Clarence House says they will not be commenting. "We don't comment on Prince William's private life," the rep says. Britain's The Sun newspaper first reported Saturday that the pair had reached an "amicable agreement" to separate.

The pair are said to have grown increasingly independent of each other since their university days. William is currently taking an armored corps commander course in Dorset, around 125 miles west of London, and it has kept him from Middleton and her new life in London.

Middleton, who is an accessories buyer for the British fashion chain Jigsaw, also was having difficulties with the media pressure that came with being his long-term girlfriend. (Speculation continued over whether the couple would get engaged.)

Although she has been "brave," as one friend tells PEOPLE, the attention was an ongoing source of trouble. Earlier this month she won a public apology from a British newspaper after it printed a photograph of her heading to work.

The engagement talk peaked in December, when she appeared at his graduation from military college, sitting in a prominent seat along with her parents and two of his closest friends.

She was pursued everywhere by paparazzi photographers -- as Princess Diana was.

"She is stuck in London while he is living in an officer's mess. Kate feels hugely frustrated that their relationship just seems to be going backwards at a rate of knots."

Last month the Sun published a photo of William with an 18-year-old Brazilian student in a nightclub and said he had invited another girl back to his barracks for a nightcap.

Media glare
Some commentators said the constant media glare may have become too much for Kate, who filed a harassment complaint with Britain's press watchdog last month.

"This relationship formed in a media-free zone (at university) but of course since then Kate has been under intense pressure from paparazzi photographers," Arthur Edwards, a Sun photographer, told the BBC. "She really was at her wits end."

As students, William and Kate shared a house. From there, romance blossomed. She is widely recognised as being the one who persuaded the prince to stay on and complete his studies.

Royalty-obsessed tabloids were always convinced she would one day be Queen Kate. The royal family had very much accepted her in the inner circle of what they call "The Firm".

Thank you Sara for lots of interesting links for me to read.

Perhaps Kate will make money if she want to write a book about their relationship? - wait and see!!

Very sad because William and Kate have been together for long time than Charles and Diana. I thought they are happy and love each other... I often saw them from the magazines, newspapers, etc... Sad... :(
