I do not want to start a huge debate but why do those people implant their child when it is not yet needed and dont implant them when it is needed?

I sure won't implant my hypothetical child if he's getting some benefit from HAs. There is no reason to put the child at risk. I wonder how can some take the surgery so lightly. There's a whole list of complications from that. Yes I also know about the benefits of CIs but you have to factor in the risks as well. Id only "force" CI on him if he had no residual hearing, otherwise he will get some benefit from HAs and I will wait and let him make the choice to go CIs when he's older.

Didn't we both get banned for discussing this?

Who defines "need it"? Obviously if the child gets an implant the audiologist, surgeon, parent, and in Miss Kat's case, a whole commitee, decided that they did "need it". But in truth, a CI is totally optional, and no one has to have one.

I was referring to other people that I know whom have got their child implanted when wasnt necessary and Im also referring to people who knowingly are denying their child a great chance to hear

Lots of people think that it is better to wait or never do a CI at all. They don't think they are denying their child anything.

But again, if the other family got a CI, there had to be a reason that all the doctors believed the child needed it.

I guess because when it they seem to need it, the reality is that their chances of success would be low because they have too much hearing loss or damages.

People who seem like they don't need it really do need it to make the best out of the hearing they have left instead of using hearing aids.

I am living proof that no one really "needs" a CI. I did read that as long as the brain is being stimulated by sounds and some speech, it will fully develop the auditory processing centers. The majority of deaf people still have residual hearing that can be amplified with HAs. Theres lipreading, sign language and writing as a means of communication so not understanding 100% of speech needn't limit anyone.

I have answer to why.... Some of you may not like this but this is the truth...

Most hearing parents who find themselves with Deaf child, they freaked out and got lost. Simply put, they can not accept the fact that their chid is Deaf, so they want to FIX it somehow, so having them thinking that getting CI will have them avoid learning sign language and learn to be adaptive with Deaf world... SAD!!! The real problem is the Hearing parents that got themselve in abyss denial. Want proof? Easy! Give me answer to what percentage of Hearing parents with Deaf child learn sign language???

There is answer. Hope someday they will change. CI is not a solution, adaptive is a solution.

Wow, are you the parent of a deaf child? Is that how you know what we think and why we do the things we do?

No, I am Deaf parent of hearing child.

I am Deaf Child of hearing parents who learned to adapt my communication needs. Less than 10% of hearing parents willing to adapt with their Deaf child by learn sign language. In other words at least 90% of hearing person with Deaf Child just outright refused or claim that they can't learn sign language and prefer child learn how to talk without learning sign language.... SAD! I have seen enough.

3/4 of the parents in my state's PIP program use at least some sign.

Just because a parent chooses a CI doesn't mean they are in denial about their child or that they wish their child was hearing. I have never heard a single parent express that they wish their child wasn't deaf, never.

Where do you get your information from? How do you interact with hearing parents of deaf children?

Also, just because someone disagrees with you about the best way to educate their child, or about which language mode to use, does NOT mean they don't care or love their child. They simple disagree with you.

U r so lucky your parents leanred to sign and adapt to your deaf needs instead of the other way around.

One doesn't need a CI in order to be successful. Many of us r proof of leading successful lives without CIs.

If one wants it, their choice and I am supportive but the idea or view that one needs it...I am not supportive of that. That's my view.

Many people have different beliefs and decisions, it doesnt mean that nobody's right or wrong

Agreed. A CI is a "want" but not a "need" I never learned sign language and was raised 100% oral. I depended on lipreading and the sounds I heard with HAs assisted with lipreading. It seems like many hearing parents of deaf children force CIs so itll be more convinent for the parent. I am prepared for challenges if I ever have children and they happen to be deaf. I will raise them as I was raised.

I am not saying every one of them, I am rather in general, and what I have seen.

It is not about right or wrong, it is about shock that they received from Doctor that had to break so-called bad news to parents that their child is Deaf, usually they go nuts! They would do everything they think they could to fix the problem. This is so common.

Of course not every hearing parents would automatically request CI, but too many of them use this as excuse to try to fix Deaf child. They forgot, once Deaf will always be Deaf.

Actually, having a child with a CI is from from convenient. It sucks when I have to leave a movie 15 minutes in and run home to get a battery! Pre-ci she didn't care if the sound left.

It was much easier when my daughter only wanted ASL. We learned and then we just did the Deaf community thing. It was easy. Providing her with both is much more difficult.

We have to help her learn to make sense of the language that she is getting, we have to provide constant exposure to speech, we have to come up with creative activities to expand her vocabulary, we have to drive to therapy, MAPping, etc. It is not easy or convenient to teach spoken language to a deaf child.

And since none of you have one, you wouldn't know.

But a lot of us used to be one! :deaf: child that is.

We might know more than you.

Yes we have gone through all the therapy n stuff
