If you want to change the way the audiology works. Then get Deaf people involved in the audiology field as a career.

Hearing audiologist can focus on sound and Deaf audiologist can help Deaf to develop language using hearing aid and ASL.

This will be the most powerful influence to make changes within the audiology profession. Parents will contact an audiologist first to find out what can be done for their Deaf child. A Deaf audiologist will emphasize speech, American Sign Language, and auditory aids.

This will create a new era of how to help a Deaf child succeed in life. If a parent chooses to go to the cochlear implant route and make sure they get American Sign Language therapy because the child cannot speak until their vocal chords are developed to pronounce speech. What could work at that period is to use American Sign Language to help the child start language development at a very early age. I am very confident that parents will allow that because they want something to work for their Deaf child. After a few years their parents will realize how much their child had succeed by learning ASL and pave way for speech. This will create a bicultural approach which is a win-win situation.

Technology is moving fast and there are new inventions if we work along with this and we will enable to promote American Sign Language at the same time. if we fight this and we will lose for sure also will be labeled as inable to reason.

The rationale behind this that parents will prefer to speak with a Deaf audiologist because they have the experience of being Deaf. Hearing people learned about Deafness from the books and internships. Deaf person knows it from living and understands what will work for the Deaf child. An audiologist is a professional degree and is well respected.

If we can get Deaf people to enroll Gallaudet’s audiology program and in a few years the philosophy will change for the best because it works also promotes inclusiveness.

What do you think of this idea?....

The audi at my work is deaf with bilateral CIs. She strongly advocates for the use of ASL along with speech.

When I took audi classes in the audi depts, there were many deaf audi majors and that was 7 years ago. Hope they all are now working as audis.

First of all, source need ;)

Deaf Audiologist? Hmmm... I am not sure. I get the picture this like a person who have no legs helping other person with no legs. It can be either successfully or ridicilious. I have to see how it goes before I judge.

I dunno about a deaf audiologist, I would prefer a hard of hearing audiologist or a hearing audiologist who have highly experience of training, have knowledge of the deaf culture, because of that I'm afraid that a deaf audiologist would limited language development for the deaf by suggest to reply on sign language only. A hearing audiologist can tell you more about your speech-Language because hearing person to do the listening check and may know what's would be best for you.

That would be against the code of ethics for audiologists to promote ASL only. Also, technology with testing one's hearing is so different than it was 30 years ago. I have seen the deaf audi at my work do the assessments and none of them required her to listen to anything.

Ohh really? That's interesting, Thanks Shel. ;)

No problem. I gotta admit when I first took my audi classes at Gallaudet and discovered many of the audi majors were deaf or hoh, I was shocked cuz I thought the job required being able to hear. They told me that it has changed. :) Technology is giving many deaf people more opportunities to different kinds of jobs that were impossible years ago.

Deaf Audiologist? wow very interesting... It must be very open mind technology.

I think deaf and hearing audiologists should work together to expose deaf children like that... It's great for deaf children to be expose to know what hearing is about and deaf is about.

We have some deaf doctors of physical/psychology therapies to expose deaf children but they work together with hearing doctors.

Same idea with " deaf " interpreter, not just hearin'. :)

Wow, I'm curious how is this person is be able to listen and sign at the same time?...

I prefer to let that person to tell/share it. I already left a message to that person about this issue. :)

Ah I forgot about Javapride, yeah I already knew that...Thanks anyways

In this day and age of wonderful technological advances, it is my understanding that deaf folks can be audiologists because a lot of the work done today is via computer.
