Recently our EI "specialist" was kind enough to inform me that I needed to be educated in the Deaf World/Deaf Culture/ Deaf Education before I could make a decision on my youngest daughters behalf. I for one don't claim to be a specialist in the field, but really? Give me a break, I AM and always will be aware of my daughters needs and the direction in which needs to be taken. Needless to say this "specialist" is no longer involved in my youngest life. We will and always will be part of the Deaf World and the ASL language, so please by all means be a Bitch on your childrens behalf and laugh it up when you know YOUR decisions are the correct ones! :lol:

Is this specialist is trying to encourage you that your daughter doesn't need ASL or be a part of the Deaf community?
 
I guess encourage to your daughter teach how language! I am not sure

:laugh2: Normally I'd think that to be good advice, but your EI must not know how much you are already involved in the Deaf community.
 
What really gets me is that she IS aware we're already involved heavily with our oldest, that this isn't our 1st go around in the Deaf World. It was an accumalation of things - like my teaching Sadie her colors the incorrect way???? - or our not truly being involved in Mass.Commission for the Deaf ( which we have been for 12 years) or that because Sadie is WILD that I need the assistance of Beacon (behavioural Specialist) and after telling her that I wasn't interested she told me that that wasn't something I was going to get assistance on through TLC. I basically told her boss, until shes an expert in the DeafWorld, shes not to step into my home again, and which point she was taken off of Sadies case. I just find it annoying that they think they know best, when actually they know only what they have been taught and haven't actually involved themselves in this World and Culture.
 
And yes Shel at the beginning she was telling me that going full ASL and enrolling Sadie into a Deaf program was the wrong avenue to take.

I will be happy to meet her and act like a total bitch to her. I cant believe people like them. They have been respoonsible for screwing up many deaf people's lives including mine. Good for you!

Oh lord, one of those workers who only have a shallow understanding of the Deaf World and Culture, and who think it's only for Voice off unaided kids. You did the right thing.
ASL is for Hoh kids too! I mean just b/c she's getting ASL and Deaf Ed, it doesn't mean that she won't be getting traditional hoh style interventions. I think the worker may have an outdated view of Deaf Ed. A lot of people who aren't on top of Deaf ed, may not understand that it's getting a LOT more hoh friendly. Besides, if you don't do Deaf ed/intervention, the other option is basicly Chapter 766/Easter Seals style special ed/intervention. Which is based on a purely rehabiliative educational model. Like the teachers wouldn't be well versed in Deaf Ed intervention.
AND the thing is, the ASL might help her migate her behavorial issues.....and even if she has something like ADD or the like, she'd prolly be better served in a Deaf School, since they're better experianced with deaf special needs kids. I think most if not all Deaf schools tend to have special needs programs.
There's also Walden School (part of TLC) as an option, although it seems like that's mostly for Deaf MI or Deaf kids who were abused.
 
Maybe I'm misreading something. But isn't it a good thing for the specialist to encourage parents to be familiar with deaf culture, etc. before making a decision? Isn't that what we want?

DeafBajagal- it normally woukld be good advise. To someone who hasn't lived with in the Deaf Culture for the past 13 years. We are also parents of a 14 yo Profoundly Deaf Daughetr who is Educated/Language through ASL. I took offence at the fact that she didn't think I knew what I was doing, that making the choices that we have were the wrong ones for our youngest with a Severe Reverse Slope Hearing Loss. I was blowing off steam with this post over the fact that because she thinks shes knows, she actually hasn't got a clue. Sadie (our youngest) is the 1st child she has actually worked with with such a loss to have to depend on ASL and Deaf education and although this is NOT new to us, she still felt that her way was the right way. I apologize for the confusion

That is kind of sad. But definitly inform the person's boss, that HOH kids can and DO benifit from ASL and Deaf Ed.
 
Maybe tell the boss, that it is possible to do BOTH sign and speech with a hoh kid!!!!! I really think we need to get that out there for public knowledge.....that it's possible for hoh kids to grow up bilingal in both speech and sign. That is what is going to save ASL and Deaf Schools.
 
ASLMomma, did you tell the worker that your daughter is also going to get hoh intervention too? Maybe that's what caused the misunderstanding. I mean nowadays most deaf kids (including a lot of DODAs) get hoh intervention too. I do think that in the next few years, Deaf Ed is going to become VERY hoh friendly. I swear I want to smack those workers.....They think that kids with milder issues don't need *special stuff* but just need to learn to function "normally" ....and sadly it's not just limited to Deaf intervention. It's seen in blind/low vision, it's seen in CP/orthapedic disabilty, it's seen with apraxia, it's seen with a lot of stuff. Instead of "full toolbox" kids are pushed towards functioning as "normally as possible." :roll:Granted someone with a unilateral loss or something like blindness or sight loss in one eye, might not need stuff that bilateral dhh or blind/low vision kids might find helpful. It all boils down to audism/ableism.
I also have a feeling those workers are SO fucking CLUELESS, and are simply parrotting "Choices in Deafness" a la AG Bell.
Oh, and I am sure that there are severe kids in your state who are learning ASL too.....deafer kids tend to learn ASL, if not as a first or EI language, as a second one.
