No, because that is wrong to use a friend or family as an interpreter without compensating them. That"s why interpreters get paid. Use them.
 
No, I wouldn't use a friend to do interpreting.

There is qualified ASL interpreter in New Zealand, but this interpreter lives in Wellington.

You could request Deaf Aotearoa, if they can find/book you a ASL qualified interpreter, it won't be easy to find ASL interpreter in New Zealand.

Your other option is ask Deaf Aotearoa, if they can provide an interpreter who can understands one handed finger spelling and able to do one handed finger spelling.

I had a moderate-profound loss most of my life and went 6 years without hearing aids or sign support in school and I was fine. Not saying that is true of everyone but with a mild loss...

You need to ask yourself what you really want.

Material things such as a hearing aid, an interpreter, resolutions to your CI issues or do you feel you will have better resolution to your issues with several sit down appointments with a counsellor?

I can see you are quite off this board with your accommodation issues.
