And did you have to stay overnight. While I am waiting on the date of the surgery and I have to stay overnight after the surgery to make sure I am ok then the next day I go home.

Tell us your experiences!

Well as Alldeaf's newest borgette I'm happy to share my experience. I'm just back from hospital.

I had the surgery in the hospital's day surgery but stayed overnight. I don't believe everyone else does this though. Anyway my surgery went well - lasted about 2.5 hours. The surgeon said that the biggest obstacle was my thick hair LOL! When they took off my bandage this morning I couldn't believe it - absolutely no hair gone and the incision was very small and neat, right behind my ear.

Waking up from the anaesthetic was the hardest part though it took me a couple of hours to get over the nausea and grogginess. The incision hurt a fair bit to begin with but today I can see a noticeable decrease in the pain.

I have all the side effects that others have mentioned such as the numb top of my ear, slightly numb tongue and a little bit numb at the back of my head but apart from that pretty good for one day post surgery.

Am recovering at home now.

I hope you get your date soon Sarah!

Congratulations, R2D2!
I am glad all went well, no hair shaved you say! that is great!
I've heard ginger is very good for nausea- one teaspoonful in water. For you it's too late but maybe it can help someone else.

R2D2,

you said "all side effect" do you mean you also had vertigo? facial paralysis? Or what you said is just that?

I went back to the hotel me and Mom were staying at 2 hours after my post-surgery observation. Had pizza that night with her and watched a movie in our room, then went back home the following morning. It was great!

Sorry, no just the ones I mentioned. No vertigo or facial paralysis.

R2D2 -- welcome back and I'm so glad you're doing great. Guess you will have to :hyper: (wait) for the "turn-on" day! Glad you're doing so well and at home.

I was told that when I having CI surgery, just one day stay at the hospital. So I have no idea what the experience would be yet. I am still working on getting CI. My Medicaid turned us down. Sooo not too sure if Medicare will cover for devices but I know surgery, yes. So I'll keep researching and call and ask around for more feedbacks. What's more...I am going to CI Picinc today and will get more information.

Surgery usually last 2.5 to 4 hours. Recovery probably few hours then release you go home.

Yu are supposed to apply for health insurance then it can cover all of cost.

R2D2,

Wonderful news. Yep, you are officially a 'borg. :h5:

Hope you get your surgery date soon. :)

My CI story is we had to get up at the awful hr of 4 am to get arrive at the hospital by 530. I was actually the 1st surgery he did that day and was in the OR by shortly after 8. surgery went fine I guess, I do not remember anything from the time they put the mask over my face until I arrived back at my room at ???. (I think it was like 1 pm but who knows :dunno: could have been 11, I've never asked my hubby to clarify LOL perhaps I should) I then fell asleep after getting in the bed and didn't wake until about3. Hubby went and got something to eat while i was in dream land. :)

We left after I used the restroom. They have this thing about body funtions working before allowing you to leave. :) That night I tried sleeping lying down, gave up and used the recliner, where I slept for the next few days. I did use the pain pills or tylenol for amost a week, since a couple places on my skull would decide to start letting me know they weren't to happy about the surgery. :) It wasn't a bad pain, but why be uncomfy when you don't need to be.

The bandage was removed the day after surgery. I went back in one week after surgery and was activated and saw my ENT. Then back the following day to have 3 maps put in the processor to decide which htz works best for me.

note to those of you who are hearing or were hearing.....I actually had a problem with the programming because my idea of loud but comforable was based on the actual sound. Truthfully they could have gone even louder since when i made her stop it still didn't sound that loud. :) I went back 3 weeks later and told her that I couldn't use the thing in the wind, near anything that make a fairly loud noise etc. The noise itself wasn't so much the problem it was the reaction that it caused, a swirl of noise....the higher pitches would set off a sound like a siren, the lower ones would set of a whoo whoo whoo type ofthing. So if you are familiar with sounds be careful about going with loudness, but make sure you stop and lower it if you can feel the sound!! (and no it doesn't hurt it's just kinda like a bzzt type of thing, that's actually what I felt when it was connected to my head the first time, bzzzt.....static shocks are much much worse, lol)

But even with all that extra sound the clarity of spoken words was much better then what I was getting through my HA. Oh I also use a HA in my unimplanted ear. (at this time, sounds like it may become useless eventually) Any tips on how to get better mappings would be great from those who've already been doing them for some time and been successful :))

Yes but we earned too much and Mediciad turned me down and cannot get health insurance. So I am looking for another way to get CI though.

Ummm...I need to put in my afterward experiences...

In March of '05, we arrived at the hospital about 8:30 or so for a surgery at 10:45. Did all the check-in stuff and went to the waiting room. Sat there for a long time and started wondering what the heck is going on. Found out that one surgery took longer and it messed up the schedule all around.

Didn't get ready for surgery until 12:30 or so. I was soooo ready to get on with it and get it over with by that point. I hate the mask and so they put to sleep with the IV and I don't remember going out at all with is unusual with me (I typically watch the clock to see how long it takes...but not this time). I woke up real groggy and nausea and it was touch and go whether I would go home that day. Finally, I felt good enough and did the bathroom shinding that they let me go. The fun part was getting home. My wife was driving and it was dark. She kind of got confused (read lost) and I had to tell her how to get back on track while laying in the back of the car with my raised arm and pointing the way. Talk about hilarious as I can't hear (don't know sign) and she had a big headache and trying to communicate somehow (she is hearing and forgot I couldn't hear her).

We got home finally and I went straight to bed. Took a percuset (sp?) and slept on my back and my good side. Next day, I stayed on couch and took it easy and gradually worked back into a normal schedule. I remember my upper half of my right ear being numb, my tongue on the right side being metallic in taste especially when I drank, couldn't turn on a dime due to slight dizziness. My head felt find otherwise and I noticed no tinntius whatever. I did noticed some "clicking sounds" here and there rather softly. That went away quickly. I was hooked up 2 1/2 weeks after surgery (and that is another story in of itself).
