some time ago, I had a friend who was facing a very similar situation as your friend, and it took me a while to figure out how to get it operational again, but what I did was take out the battery, wait 30 seconds, put it back in, and tried the restore, and it worked. If you're able to do that, maybe try it? Just a thought.
