What do you do when there is no one else around you who is Deaf and have no way of seeking out the Deaf community in the country you are living in, because of the society you are in? :hmm: What do you do when you were raised in a hearing family; went to mainstream schools and raised oral, was never told about Sign Language until recently; married hearing and your children are hearing and you are the only one who is deaf? Though I can speak quite well after intensive speech therapy and much practice, it still makes me very tired. Prefer and can understand Auslan but not fluent in signing back due to minimal, and now lack of, social interaction with Deaf community; AllDeaf is all I have. I am learning some ASL too. I am moderately-severe to severely deaf. I do not see myself as HOH but as deaf/Deaf. :deaf:

Teach your family sign.

Then when you get back to your own country, try to live in a city with a larger deaf community.

Or just enjoy the communication with your own family.

Thanks B. I am doing the best I can to do that especially with my younger kids.....slow and steady win the race eh. The only way I have picked up sign, Auslan or ASL, is by DVD and Sign dictionaries and an hour of Coffee Chat a few times.

How is your communication your kids? Did you want to learn Auslan to bond with them, right? I'm in the same boat.

I get on well with my kids, it's just that speech makes me exhausted. I prefer sign but I am still a learner myself. Signing has many advantages too when communicating with kids. Yes, it does give a special bond with them.
