I traveled for 60 years. I've driven in three countries of North America and live in Illinois. I usually had a breakfast sandwich. If I didn't I would wait a little later and get McD fish sandwich. Many times dinner was from the grocer. We like the variety of meats and cheeses with the local newspaper rather than a heavy meal. Sometimes we ate Chinese. Steak n' Shake is always consistent, hot, good, and it is clean, too. We ate at the truck. Some Pilot Truck Stops have a buffet that is pretty good. There is one in Texas east of Amarillo I really liked. The one in OKC closed years ago, but it might be open now.
There is a really great oriental restaurant at Tucumcari, NM. But the place where we had the best meal for a fair price was the Senior Menu at Denny's in Winslow Arizona. Some of the best BBQ I ever ate was in the north side of Baton Rouge, but my favorite go-to-BBQ is Tomcat Corner in Grove, OK. Aside: This sleep little berg also has a 33 acre full service state park on the Honey Creek arm of Grand Lake. It accommodates RV and primitive campers. There are showers, stools, phone, hiking, covered eating, grills, boat launch, and more. Grove is between I-44 and I-40 on US 69. It has a very good little hospital and EMS service not far from the park. And it is not far from restaurants and stores, either. It is actually one of the nicest parks I've ever seen. And I LIKE parks. Grand Lake is 66,000 acres of surface water. It is in a very scenic, natural, rural setting.
There is a chain of oriental buffet called Panda that are usually very good. I loved the one in Tulsa that is not too far from East I-44, but the one in Springfield, MO I did not like so much. I also ate at a lot of nameless places, and had hotel food service.
Unfortunately there are states that do not have very good health standards. This is why when I travel I drink only bottled, or fresh hot coffee, and I stop at grocers for snacks and lighter meals.
